Greenville is the county seat of and the most populous city in Pitt County, North Carolina, United States; the principal city of the Greenville metropolitan area; and the 11th-most populous city in North Carolina. It was incorporated in 1771 as Martinsborough (named for Josiah Martin, the last royal governor of North Carolina), and in 1774 it was moved 3 miles [5 km] west from its original site to its present location.
