Apple Valley is a city in northwestern Dakota County in the State of Minnesota, and a suburb of the Twin Cities. The city's population in 2020 was 56,374 making it the 17th most populous city in Minnesota. Apple Valley's historical roots lead back to the mid-1800s when it was a farming community known as Lebanon Township. The first settlers to the area were believed to have come from the east coast around 1855. On April 6, 1858, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners created Union Township.
