Lake in the Hills is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,965. The village is most known for its rampant residential growth which occurred most heavily in the 1990s. The village of Lake in the Hills was founded by Federal Judge Walter J. La Buy in 1923. La Buy purchased 472 acres of the land in 1926 and built five stucco homes. Lake in the Hills, in its early days, was a popular vacation spot and attracted numerous visitors from the Chicago area.
