Chicago State University is a Predominantly Black, public university in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School, it was an innovative teachers college. Eventually the Chicago Public Schools assumed control of the school and it became Chicago Teachers College. In March 1867, the Cook County Board of Supervisors created a Normal school at Blue Island on a two-year experimental basis; Daniel S. Wentworth was the first principal. The school opened in 1869 as a permanent institution in Englewood, which was a village far beyond the outskirts of Chicago at that time.
