The Archdiocese of San Antonio encompasses 27,841 square miles and 19 counties serving more than 1 million Catholic residents in this area. In 1874 the Diocese of San Antonio was created, and in 1926 the San Antonio Diocese was elevated to an archdiocese. In addition to San Fernando Cathedral, the oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States, historic landmarks include Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission San Francisco de la Espada, and Mission San Juan Capistrano. Mass has been celebrated in the area of the archdiocese for more than 300 years. It was originally part of the Diocese of Galveston, and later became part of the Ecclesiastical Province of New Orleans.
