The Pharmacology and Cell Biology Group within Discovery Psychiatry is seeking an experienced and self-motivated scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will lead and conduct independent research investigating psychiatric conditions in vitro using novel cell-based strategies in support of target validation and pipeline programs. This member of our team will work closely within the group to achieve strategic research goals as well as collaborate across groups within and outside of AbbVie. This hands-on, lab-based role is an excellent opportunity to make an impact in the growing field of neuropsychiatry within AbbVie. Responsibilities. Act as a subject matter expert in cell-based models of complex neurological disease; introduce new concepts and technologies to advance research capabilities. Independently design and optimize assays to characterize disease-relevant cell-based models of psychiatric disease. Perform genetic and pharmacological modulation of targets in both clonal cell lines and i. PSC models to better understand target biology. Collaborate with external partners from academia, consortia and CROs. Contribute to group and project team strategy by proposing and refining experimental approaches. Present findings to internal teams as well as external partners; publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present work at scientific conferences. Provide scientific guidance and training to junior scientists and research associates. Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, and controlled drug and radioactive compounds where applicable Qualifications. Required:Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 12 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience, preferred. Previous experience within the biotech/ pharma industry, preferably in direct support of therapeutic programs. Extensive experience in the development, troubleshooting and optimization of cell-based assays, displaying the knowledge and ability to explore multiple approaches to find novel solutions to complex problems. Experience using and characterizing i. PS neuron model systems. Proficiency across a range of experimental techniques, including molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, high content imaging, high throughput electrophysiology, genetic and/or pharmacological target modulation. Ability to independently plan experiments, troubleshoot, and interpret data; ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions. Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively collaborate cross-functionally. Desired: Project leadership experience within pharma/ biotech, preferably within psychiatry research. Experience in the field of bioenergetics and metabolism. Psychiatry therapeutic area experience. Curious and creative, with the ability to think outside the box, take risk, and actively solve project-related challenges
