Full-time, 100% (12-month basis)The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time Instructor in Equine Ambulatory Services at Midwest Equine at Illinois (MWE). MWE is part of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), serving as the primary care service for the Equine Medicine and Surgery (EQMS) section of the department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. The EQMS section consists of 12 faculty (including MWE faculty), 9 house officers, 9 technicians and works closely with the farrier faculty and apprentices. Our goal at MWE is to provide exemplary customer service, practice medicine in the best interest of the horse balanced with the client’s needs and expectations, expose students to routine cases encountered in a private practice setting that focuses on common presentations with practical solutions and supplement referral caseload to the VTH when appropriate. Professional opportunity: Midwest Equine at Illinois is an autonomous equine clinic managed on a private practice model. The receiving consists primarily of field service calls with occasional haul-in appointments seen at a College of Veterinary Medicine property. In addition to the daily field service responsibilities, faculty are expected to be available after-hours for weekday, weekend and holiday emergency services. Emergency duties are shared by clinicians and house officers on a negotiated, rotating schedule. Ambulatory trucks are stocked to the preference of the clinician, and each truck has digital radiography and ultrasound units and dental equipment. Clinicians share access to video endoscopy and extracorporeal shockwave units. The demographics of the equine population in central Illinois consist of a diverse mixture of pet horses and donkeys, performance horses of varying levels and from multiple disciplines predominantly represented by Western performance horses, English Sport Horses and Standardbred Harness Racing. Preventative care, dental maintenance, routine lameness evaluations, first opinion medical and minor outpatient and field surgical procedures make up the majority of the services provided by MWE. We are seeking a strong team player with a business mindset who will treat this practice as their own. Requirements: Candidates must have a DVM degree or equivalent, have completed an equine internship or have a minimum of 1 year of post-graduate equine veterinary experience. Duties: This position is a 100% appointment in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. The appointment will be full-time and will be a non-tenured, academic position with a starting date on or about July 16, 2026. Clinical practice will occupy up to 85% of your 12-month appointment. It is expected that instruction of veterinary professional students will occur during your clinical engagement. You will also participate in training of veterinary students and interns as needed. At least 15% of your appointment will be available for vacation, sick leave, holidays, attendance at continuing education conferences, professional improvement, scholarship, and participation in academic activities as they present themselves. Attendance of departmental faculty meetings and other scheduled college faculty meetings is encouraged whenever possible. Primary call for after-hours emergencies will be expected and monetary compensation will be provided based on the number of emergency cases covered while on duty. Salary: The budgeted salary range for this position is $90,000 to $120,000. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable positions.
