Licensure or Certification Requirements(Class A) Restricted. Distinguishing Job Characteristics. Makes skilled mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs to gasoline and diesel equipment including light and heavy trucks, street sweepers, refuse trucks, backhoes, graders and other equipment and vehicles. Essential Duties and Responsibilities. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Makes skilled mechanical repairs to trucks, road rollers, bulldozers, street sweepers, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, automobiles and other vehicles or equipment. Repairs mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, steering, exhaust, and brake systems and performs some transmission work. [e.g., overhauls engines, pumps, and compressors. Replaces mechanic and electrical parts. Adjusts, maintains and replaces hydraulic controls and systems on heavy equipment. Rewires ignition system, lights and instrument panels. Installs and repairs emergency lights, switches and fire extinguishers]. Troubleshoots engine and diagnoses repair needs and methods. Performs regular servicing and preventive maintenance work. Cleans and lubricates equipment, performs regular tune-ups and adjustments, inspects and replaces parts as required, etc. Follows work orders and prescribed preventive maintenance procedures. Makes mechanical repairs, adjustments and maintenance to chainsaws, weed-eaters, paint striper, jackhammers, wood chippers, compressors, and other small engines. Makes gas and electric welds on all types of equipment, machinery, parts, sign posts, and other items. Fabricates hitches, bumpers, mounting brackets, and other parts. Rebuilds backhoe and loader buckets, frames, center pivots and other parts. Performs bodywork, makes fiberglass repairs, and replaces glass. Paints vehicle bodies, tool boxes, compressors, and other parts. Keeps shop facilities and equipment in clean, orderly and good operating condition. Maintains work and other required records. Makes emergency road repairs. Maintains maintenance & repair records, and documents vendor invoices for billing. Other Duties and Responsibilities. Assists or fills in on any other manual, semi-skilled or skilled work in the Division. Locates and determines best price for parts necessary to make repairs. Scope of Supervision. None. Equipment Operated. Mechanic's hand tools; torches; hydraulic presses; gas and electric welders; engine analyzer tester; test lights; taps and dies; abrasive cutoff saw; plasma cutter; grinders; paint guns; vehicle hoist; engine lifts; jacks; battery tester; air conditioner charging equipment; telephone. All city-owned vehicles and equipment [during maintenance, repair and testing functions only]. Contacts with Others. City employees; parts vendors; general public. Confidential Data. Police Department undercover vehicles. Working Conditions. Good working conditions but with frequent exposure to grease, oil, vehicle emissions, paint, heat, cold, fumes, noise, dirt, dust and other conditions. Exposure to abrasions and other injuries while working on or around vehicles or equipment. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to injury from operation of equipment and work requirements. Usual Physical Demands. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when performing maintenance work. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Knowledge of: principles of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems; air and hydraulic brake systems; suspensions; drive trains; computer command equipment; bodywork; cooling & heating systems; electrical systems and diagnostics; standard mechanical repair methods; the construction and assembly of heavy equipment and vehicles; work hazards and safety precautions. Ability to: maintain work and parts records; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and city officials; perform manual labor associated with major repair work; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, parts vendors and general public. Skill in: mechanical, electrical and hydraulic system repairs; welding (gas and electric); use of mechanic's hand and power tools and other mechanic's equipment; use of testing instruments; diagnosing engine problems. GENERAL INFORMATION - Eligible List. The examination for Vehicle Mechanic will consist of a written exam and a skills exam. Applicants must attain a passing score of 70% or more on the combined scores of written and skills assessment exam to proceed to the eligible list. Exams will be weighted at 40% of attained points on written exam and 60% of attained points on skills assessment. Applicants must pass the combined scores with at least a 70% to proceed to the eligibility list. If applicable, seniority points will be added to the passing scores of candidates who are currently employed in the classified service of the City of Zanesville. Credit for Military Service. Applicants who have been honorably discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for additional credit of 20% on their exam provided a passing score is obtained. Copy of honorable discharge or Form DD 214 must be submitted before the exam. No credit is given if proof of discharge is submitted after exam date. Copy of honorable discharge or Form DD 214 can be submitted as an attachment in the electronic application. Submitting an Application. After the application period closing, applications will be reviewed by the Civil Service Commission to determine whether applicant has met the required minimum qualifications. Applicant will be notified by mail regarding the outcome of the review. If approved to proceed in the process, applicant will be notified by mail of the scheduled test date, time and location.
