Under general supervision, enforces Sandoval County’s animal care laws and ordinances and provides a variety of animal care field services for the County; provides public education related to animal control laws and ordinances; issues citations for animal offenses; collects and delivers errant or lost animals to the shelter facility; and transports injured animals to veterinarians. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: High School Diploma/ GED Certificate from an accredited institution and one year of animal handling experience within an animal shelter, veterinarians office, or similar work environment. Required Licenses or Certifications: Valid New Mexico Driver’s License; Other licenses and certifications may be required within a specified time period after hire. Other Requirements Additional Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. This is a safety- sensitive position subject to random drug testing in accordance with County policy. Essential Job Functions Responds to routine and emergency calls for service regarding noisy, nuisance, loose, or aggressive animals; provides field services including capturing domestic and wild animals; may dispense minor first aid treatment to animals at scene; examines injured and ill animals to select proper treatment disposition; removes dead animals from roadways; removes animals from hazardous situations; and transports injured or ill animals to veterinarians/shelters. Checks on welfare of animals within the County limits as to food, water, shelter, and their overall health. Assesses reported or observed violations of animal care regulations; makes determinations and takes required action such as writing citations to non-complaint residents. Gathers evidence on animal care cases, including photographs and other information for presentation in court; prepares all discovery; makes court appearances and provides testimony as needed. Provides information and education to the public covering a range of animal care topics including laws and ordinance, animal nutrition, behavior, injuries, and common diseases. Prepares accurate and complete manual and automated records and reports. Supports the relationship between the County and the constituent population by providing excellent customer service; promotes the County goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures; and maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records and County information. Ensures that job duties are completed in strict adherence to established safe work practices. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
