King County Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link light rail service and City of Seattle’s streetcar system. Link light rail currently spans a 44.5-mile route from Federal Way to Lynnwood and a 14.8-mile route from Redmond to International District. Additional expansions to the Link system will be coming online for years to come. Rail Electrical Worker Helper assists journey-level Rail Electrical Workers in the repair, maintenance, and repair of rail traction electrification systems. This recruitment will immediately fill up to three [3] Career Service positions and may also be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future for future Career Service vacancies in this classification, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority. This position is open to King County employees and the general public, although current members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 77, who are fully qualified to be dispatched for Groundman jobs may apply within the initial five (5) working days of this posting will be given first consideration. Job Duties

As the Rail Electrical Worker-Helper, you will: Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment from trucks; may operate and drive line trucks as a backup as required. Inspect and hand equipment and materials to crew workers repairing power lines. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic safely around the repair site; alert crew workers of potential hazards. Assist crew workers in trimming trees, shoveling dirt and gravel, and performing other tasks required for maintenance. Assist transit vehicles around work areas. Alert drivers and operators to repair work. Respond to emergency calls for repairs during non-working hours as necessary. Inventory and maintain supplies, tools, and equipment. Clean work areas, tools, and equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Minimum Qualifications: Proficient in the use and maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment relevant to the electrical trade Familiarity with applicable laws, codes, and regulations Strong understanding of occupational hazards and safety practices associated with electrical work Effective oral and written communication abilities Solid foundation in basic mathematics Skilled in operating various power tools and related equipment Capable of working in diverse environments including elevated railways, tunnels, bridges, and track-level sites—indoors, outdoors, and in adverse weather conditions Ability to safely and efficiently perform duties within an active rail transit system Demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team Proficient in business software applications, including the Microsoft Office suite. Necessary special requirements:A valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. If you possess an out-of-state driver’s license, you must obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire. Applicants must also possess a Washington State Class “A” or Class “B” commercial driver’s license (CDL) valid for both manual and automatic transmissions, with air brake endorsement and maintain an acceptable driving record. Applicants without a valid Class “A” or “B” CDL must possess a Washington State Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), class "A" or “B”, with air brake endorsement, by the time a conditional offer of employment is extended, and must be able to obtain their full Class “A” or “B” CDL valid for both manual and automatic transmissions, with air brake endorsement, within six (6) months of hire. In addition to the minimum qualifications, the most competitive candidates will possess the following desired qualifications:Experience or demonstrated ability to work in and around high voltage equipment under the direction of journey- level Rail Electrical Workers. Physical Requirements:This position requires the ability to run a hand line, shovel dirt and gravel, assist in raising poles, jump trolleys, and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance). Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires exposure to traffic and high voltage wires. Successful candidates will be required to wear Arc Flash uniforms, category 2 daily and up to category 4 as needed. Metro provides the uniforms.
