Performs routine, project-based, specialty, and emergency custodial services within residential facilities to ensure assigned areas meet cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and quality standards. This position is responsible for the care and upkeep of assigned spaces and for following established procedures, schedules, and safety protocols. Housekeepers work independently while maintaining effective communication with the Housekeeping Supervisor and contributing to a team-based custodial operation. Although this role does not include supervisory responsibilities, it requires accountability, professionalism, attention to detail, and prompt reporting of facility or safety concerns. Typical Duties/ Job Duties Housing Facilities Operations & Custodial Services Perform routine, detailed, project based, emergency, and specialty custodial cleaning in residence halls, including occupied and vacant rooms, suite style and apartment style units Clean and sanitize restrooms, common areas, and high touch surfaces using proper infection prevention practices and required dwell times Support intensive seasonal cleaning operations including summer turnover, conferences, winter break operations, special events, and weekend coverage Maintain assigned areas in a condition that reflects care, attention to detail, and departmental cleanliness standards Assist with furniture movement, room setups, and takedowns for events and seasonal operations as assigned Equipment, Chemical, & Safety Compliance Independently operate custodial equipment including vacuums, auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, Kai. Vacs, and related tools Select, mix, apply, and manage cleaning and disinfecting chemicals in accordance with SDS guidelines and safety regulations Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety practices at all times Maintain custodial equipment, tools, closets, and workspaces in clean, organized, and serviceable condition Report unsafe conditions, equipment issues, or hazards promptly to the Housekeeping Supervisor Work Execution, Communication, & Accountability Follow written and verbal work instructions and established cleaning schedules and procedures Communicate effectively with the Housekeeping Supervisor and team members regarding work progress, challenges, and area needs Take ownership of assigned spaces by identifying areas needing additional attention and addressing them within established scope Provide professional, respectful, and responsive service to students, staff, and campus partners Interact with building occupants in a courteous and solution oriented manner Maintain reliable attendance, effective time management, and flexibility to support operational needs Administrative, Inventory, & Reporting Support Accurately complete assigned work orders, cleaning logs, and required documentation in a timely manner Maintain adequate custodial supplies in assigned areas Monitor supply usage and notify the Housekeeping Supervisor when replenishment is needed Properly store supplies and equipment to ensure safety, accessibility, and inventory control Observe and report facilities issues such as plumbing leaks, lighting outages, damage to fixtures or furnishings, or other maintenance concerns Report security or safety concerns observed during custodial duties On-Call & Emergency Response Serve as a member of the Housekeeping On Call Team throughout the academic year, university breaks, and summer for a residential population exceeding 2,000 students Respond to custodial related emergencies, including spills, biohazard cleanups as assigned, and urgent sanitation needs Ensure accurate incident reporting and communicate follow up needs to the Housekeeping Supervisor Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safety protocols Ability to perform routine and specialty cleaning tasks with attention to detail Ability to operate custodial equipment safely and effectively Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication within a team environment Strong sense of personal responsibility, pride in workmanship, and respect for the residential community Basic documentation and record-keeping skills Strong reliability, time management, and adaptability Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Ability to meet the physical demands of the position Preferred Qualifications One (1) year or more of custodial, housekeeping, or related experience Experience in a campus, residential, or customer-facing environment Familiarity with infection-prevention or institutional cleaning practices Physical Requirements Regular standing and walking for extended periods Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling Ability to lift, carry, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier loads with assistance Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, bodily fluids, and varied indoor temperatures Work may occur during evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency situations as operational needs require EEO Statement All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or status as a protected veteran.
