The Office of Residence Life invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Residential Engagement (Operations & Inclusion). This is a full-time, 12-month continuing, Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Assistant Dean & Director of Housing Operations. Responsibilities The Assistant Director joins a team of dedicated student affairs professionals under the leadership of the Assistant Vice President/ Dean of Residence Life and Auxiliary Services including the Assistant Dean & Director of Housing Operations, Director of Residential Engagement, Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities, and Director of Conferences & Residential Services. The Assistant Director, in partnership with the Assistant Director of Residential Housing Operations and the Assistant Director of Residential Engagement & Inclusion, supports the Assistant Dean & Director of Housing Operations in all DEIB-related administrative housing functions, including but not limited to housing assignments, housing selection, and occupancy management for our Living Learning Communities; managing housing accommodations with the Office for Disability and Access; and utilization of the Star. Rez housing software to support the application process for Living Learning Communities. This role also contributes to the development of administrative policies and housing timelines and is responsible for updating and maintaining departmental web content. The Assistant Director directly oversees the operations and supervision of an on-campus housing cluster in collaboration with an Area Coordinator. This includes providing direct support to residents and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and well-managed living environment. The position supports all Oberlin students including those who reside off campus. In all aspects of their work, the Assistant Director demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusion, customer service, and student support. They utilize excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, parents, colleagues, faculty, staff, and external community members. The ability to communicate clearly and promptly is essential, as is the capacity to build and maintain collaborative relationships that support students’ personal growth and academic success. Essential Job Functions The incumbent’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties:Housing Operations & Assignments Collaborate with the Housing Operations team on the development and implementation of housing operations, including occupancy management, housing selection, assignments, off-campus housing, meal plan administration, and data management using Star. Rez software. Oversee the room change process for Living Learning Communities and assist students in finding alternative housing options and roommates. Assist with Winter and Summer Housing operations and co-manage all related administrative processes. Assist with Early Arrival, Late Stay, and Break Housing processes each semester, including communication with students and relevant campus offices. Collaborate with Facilities Operations to coordinate room cleanings and manage the room-ready sheet at the start and end of each term. Assist with check-in/check-out, room inspections, and damage billing processes at the beginning and end of each semester. Support departmental efforts for residence hall openings/closings, life safety checks, and facility inspections. Student Support & Accommodations Serve on the Disability Housing Accommodation Committee in partnership with the Office for Disability and Access; meet with approved students to ensure appropriate housing accommodations. Assist with the Emergency Room Process, ensuring emergency spaces are prepared and maintained. Engage with students, families, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to address housing and student life questions with professionalism and compassion. Staff Supervision & Development Directly support and mentor one entry-level Area Coordinator. Assist in hiring, training, and supporting departmental staff, including planning and implementing training programs. Conduct & Community Standards Serve as a conduct hearing officer, educating students about residential and college policies while fostering an educational approach to accountability. Maintain a regular on-campus presence and serve in the campus-wide on-call rotation, responding to crises as required. Campus & Community Collaboration Work closely with a variety of campus partners, including Living Learning Community Advisors, Office for Institutional Equity, Center for Intercultural Engagement, Dean of Students Office, Facilities Operations, Counseling and Psychological Services, Campus Safety, and the Office for Disability and Access. Engage with city offices such as the Office of the City Manager, the Oberlin Police Department, and local landlords to support off-campus housing and student welfare. Serve as a liaison with multiple offices to facilitate consistent collaboration and information-sharing. Marketing & Communication Assist in the development and management of department websites, social media, and other communication strategies to inform and engage the student community. Communicate clearly and timely manner through in-person, verbal, and written channels with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Departmental Engagement Participate in regular Office of Residence Life and Division of Student Affairs meetings. Maintain set office hours in the Central Residence Life Office. Support summer initiatives, including Conference Services and Staff Training. Attend and support college and division-sponsored community events. Additional Responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and institutional goals. Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications Master’s degree, which can be in student personnel or another higher education field; excellent oral and written communication skills, strong customer service and organizational skills, proven ability to work collegially with a variety of constituencies, and traits that complement and demonstrate integrity and cooperation in relation to administration and management. Desired Qualifications 2-4 years progressive professional experience in the following areas is desirable: residence hall administration, supervision, website development, database management, student support services and oversight of multifaceted processes. Experience with Star. Rez housing management system is strongly preferred.
