The Athletics Counseling Team within Student Health and Wellness (S - Ha. W) Mental Health at The University of Connecticut (Storrs Campus) is searching for a full-time licensed clinician with specific expertise and professional background in delivering culturally affirming and responsive clinical mental health services with a particular focus on working with College Student-Athletes identified as Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC). The incumbent must evidence a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of clinical services and to promoting social justice and human dignity and eliminating the impact of oppression in a collegiate mental health setting. The position is a full-time, 12-month in-person position reporting to the Director for Student-Athlete Mental Health Services, located on the Storrs Campus. The University of Connecticut is a member of the Big East Conference, an NCAA Division I institution, Hockey East Conference and an affiliate in the Coastal Athletic Conference. Student Athlete Mental Health services are highly utilized by student athletes and Department of Athletics staff seeking consultation. As such, the incumbent will be responsible for conducting direct clinical services spanning the full Mental Health service array, including but not limited to screening and assessments, individual and group psychotherapy, professional consultation, educational programming outreach, and team related psychoeducation. The position requires generalist skills to be able to respond to a wide variety of presenting issues of college student-athletes. Although student-athletes will be the specialized focus for this position, the clinician may also provide services to the general UConn student population, including rotating crisis on-call coverage, crisis intervention, and urgent consultation. In addition, the staff member may serve as a clinical supervisor in the S - Ha. W Mental Health training program. The S - Ha. W Mental Health office is open Monday and Thursday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. Some evening hours will be required. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary Responsibilities Include: Clinical Services As a multi-disciplinary team member, work closely with clinical case managers, other members of the clinical counseling team, and Sports Medicine staff to consult, collaborate, and provide holistic, comprehensive care. Consult and collaborate with Psychiatric prescribers regularly on unique consideration of medication use and rules for NCAA Division I student-athletes. Consult with UConn Athletic Department personnel, parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, and other university community stakeholders, when appropriate and with appropriate authorization from the Director, to provide quality care to students. Maintain clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other patient contacts in the electronic health record. Provide on-call coverage for the general student population on a rotating basis at S - Ha. W-Mental Health. Make referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals when appropriate. Outreach and Educational Programming Conduct mental health and psychoeducational programs for student-athletes. Provide mental performance consultation to varsity athletic teams on topics such as mindfulness, visualization, managing self-talk, self-control, improving focus, and coping strategies. Conduct mental health and wellness educational programs for other university stakeholders, including orientation sessions, suicide prevention training, or other workshop presentations, and emergency support services to the campus community as required. Training Supervise and participate in training experiences for master's and/or doctoral level graduate trainees, as assigned. Other Duties Attend and participate in regular S - Ha. W and SHAW Mental Health staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service training. Participate in S - Ha. W, Student Life and Enrollment, Athletics, and other university committees, as assigned by the Director. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master’s or Doctoral degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy or related field. Must possess or must obtain Connecticut Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, or related mental health counseling licensure within one year of hire. One year of related experience, which may include hours for obtaining the license. Previous experience working effectively and collegially as part of an interdisciplinary behavioral health care team. Demonstrated experience and expertise in crisis intervention and consultation with collateral parties. Knowledge of the needs of student-athletes. Must have a demonstrated understanding of ethical and legal issues in mental health practice. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS State of CT Licensed Psychologist. Demonstrated experience providing culturally responsive and affirming mental health and performance psychology services to college student-athletes, including serving as a primary clinical provider and consultant to a collegiate athletics department; delivering services such as drop-in consultation, screening, assessment (including DSM-5 diagnosis), crisis intervention, and short-term individual and group therapy; and collaborating effectively with intercollegiate sports medicine, coaches and other athletics staff. Previous experience working in a comprehensive university counseling center. Demonstrated understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of clinical services. Demonstrated training in brief treatment models. Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant or equivalent training and experience. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in working with athletes with disordered eating and/or substance use concerns. APPOINTMENT TERMS The hiring salary range for this position is $90,485 to $123,585. This is a permanent full-time position located on the Storrs Campus, with an anticipated start date of July 2026.
