As a member of the Recreation Division, individuals in this position assist in the development, planning, supervision, and implementation of recreation programs, creating a positive, encouraging experience for participants. This individual will work collaboratively with various Recreation programs to continually improve operations and receive a well-rounded experience. The days of work and hours will include Monday-Friday, with occasional weekends, April - September in accordance with scheduled programs and trips; not to exceed 40 hours per week. The general schedule will be given at the date of hire and can be adjusted based on the student’s class schedule. This temporary employment may be scheduled through the year on a full-time basis depending on the needs of the town but will not exceed six months in length (or 1,040 hours, whichever comes first). This is strictly temporary employment. Please note that town employees (including seasonal employees) may only be employed in one classification at any one given time. SUPERVISION RECEIVED - Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Recreation Manager or the Recreation Coordinator to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances. SUPERVISION/ LEADERSHIP EXERCISED No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised. Essential Job Functions ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - The individual in the Recreation Intern role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive: May develop and implement program plans with direction from supervisor as requested. Co-lead or lead programs or trips as assigned, depending on complexity. Set up, distribute, and collect materials and equipment for programs. Assist in the creation, implementation, and coordination of community special events & programs, including but not limited to, Summer Concert Series, Farmers Market; preschool, youth & teen programs; Day Camp; athletic programming; and nature-focused programming. Provide coaching, guidance, supervision, and instruction to facilitate appropriate participation in activities. Control groups of participants, including monitoring them and their ability to ensure proper use of equipment and techniques. Participate in programs with participants as needed. Strive to adapt programs to the unique needs of the participants. Demonstrate good judgment and serve as a role model for positive and appropriate behavior through speech and action. Redirect negative/undesired behaviors from participants as needed. Maintain participant attendance during activities. Inventory and manage program equipment and supplies including vehicles, keys, town credit card, general activity supplies, and other town-owned property, as well as assist Recreation Coordinator in any needed equipment repair. Assist with the promotion of programs, trips, and special events, including creating content for social media, newsletters, etc. as needed. Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents and injuries. Serve as a resource for families, providers, and participants who have questions, suggestions, or areas of concern, and communicate summary with Recreation Coordinator. Represent the town in a positive, professional, and healthy manner. Adhere to town policies, standards, and regulations, including but not limited to proper attire, safety procedures, and overall professionalism. Ensures adherence to safety regulations and procedures. Performs related work as required and assigned. OTHER DUTIES - Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following: Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology, tools, market research, programs, etc. Participate in required staff training and meetings. Work programs, events, and trips as scheduled. Submit hours and accurate timecards on time and in compliance with town policies. Give and receive constructive criticism and feedback. Perform minor first aid and emergency contact as necessary. Complete and submit accident/incident reports as necessary. May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions. Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town. Assists other programs & town departments/divisions as necessary. Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & FORMAL TRAINING At least 16 years of age. Experience in a customer service setting – preferred. Some previous Point of Sale or cash handling experience preferred. Experience with MS Office, specifically Word, and Excel (School experience acceptable) A desire to grow, learn and bring an open mind to experiencing new skills. Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment required KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Ability to work a very flexible schedule that includes shifts in the daytime, in the evening, and occasional weekends and holidays as scheduled programs dictate. Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as dependability regarding assigned programs and events. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of principles of recreation programs and special events that serve all ages. Demonstrated skills in event planning and management. Knowledge of effective communication techniques. Strong problem-solving and reasoning skills. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to a diverse group in a professional, courteous, and timely manner both verbally and written when dealing with town employees, volunteers, program participants, vendors, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively with participants of all ages and teach fundamentals and skills of assigned program. Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and write simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to carry out assigned tasks completely and effectively. Ability to maintain composure, make sound judgments, exercise conflict resolution, and exhibit patience and courtesy when dealing with difficult or potential mental, physical, and emotionally stressful situations and/or disciplinary situations involving program guests and their families/care providers. Ability to make independent decisions and work with minimal supervision as well as part of a team by supporting others and taking initiative to complete programs or projects. Demonstrated pride, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in working with people of all ages and backgrounds. Demonstrated personal effectiveness, credibility, thoroughness, flexibility, and collaboration skills in adhering to and advancing the town’s vision, mission, and values. Ability to recognize and work within a participant’s strengths and limitations. Must have the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, e.g., copier, fax machine, and personal computer. Ability to apply common sense in order to understand and carry out simple one- or two-step instructions Ability to apply simple math skills as necessary for programs and operations using units of U.S. currency and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Proficient in computer software, including Microsoft Office suite. Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures, including in emergency situations.
