The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities is seeking a qualified HVAC Mechanic. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City HVAC systems to ensure proper climate control and environmental conditions within City buildings and structures. The incumbent will perform skilled journey-level work involving installation, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and related equipment.
Duties include but are not limited to
Perform routine preventive maintenance (daily, monthly) on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to ensure essential building systems—such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, and air conditioning—operate correctly and meet required specifications. Conduct scheduled inspections, troubleshoot problems, and make repairs. Install and replace HVAC and refrigeration equipment as needed. Complete administrative tasks, including preparing and submitting work orders, performing data entry and programming on electronic equipment, purchasing materials and parts, submitting quotes, and contacting vendors for pricing and delivery. As assigned, troubleshoot, design, and build test equipment. Adhering to all safety policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:High School Diploma or GED - One year of vocational/technical training in HVAC systems/refrigeration. Two years of HVAC experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Valid CFC certification from the Environmental Protection Agency. Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Journeyman or Master HVAC License (preferred). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary. Knowledge (some combination of the following):HVAC Equipment used in area of focus. Basic electrical knowledge. Basic math. Safety procedures. Mechanics Skills (some combination of the following):HVAC equipment inspection, repair and installation. Troubleshooting. Computer proficiency, including data entry. Building Automation System(BAS)/ HVAC controls and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) proficiency. Abilities (some combination of the following):Reading and comprehending installation instructions. Use standard HVAC equipment and tools such as voltmeters, refrigerant guges, tape measures, and hand, power, and electrical tools

The employee is frequently required to crawl, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger (pick, pinch, type or otherwise work primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palm, talk, feel, and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. - Internal use: HR Generalist to review.
