To plan for the print and media-dependent components of a technologically-rich library media program and to assist in the supervision of the media center support staff, student staff, and volunteers. As the leader in building media services, the library media specialist manages and administers the media center, assists in the instructional process, develops interpersonal relationships, and assumes professional responsibility. The characteristics are identified and described in the Performance Based Library Media Specialist Evaluation. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: LIBRARY MEDIA SERVICES - In the area of Administration, Management, and Supervision, the library media specialist shall: 1. Adopt a media philosophy .. Formulate long- and short-range goals and propose implementation and evaluation to achieve them .. Utilize the district\s adopted selection policy to develop a collection of resources that enhance teaching and learning .. Maintain open channels of communication throughout the district and community .. Establish a public relations program that will effectively inform both school and community of library media program activities .. Maintain professional resources for teachers, inform them about new materials, and involve them in selection .. Foster an atmosphere which encourages student and faculty usage .. Assist in the selection, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating of building library media support personnel as well as student assistant and volunteers .. Adopt an approved, comprehensive and efficient system of cataloging and classifying all resources .0. Maintain accurate records of library media center holdings including acquisition, circulation, and maintenance .1. Establish a plan for acquisition and replacement of hardware and software .2. Execute a maintenance program for materials and equipment .3. Organize the storage and handling of all resources for convenience, availability, and effective use .4. Provide for the use, design, and production of materials .5. Assist teachers, students and staff in the production of supplementary teaching and learning materials .6. Investigate and evaluate products, services and equipment available for purchase or lease/rental .7. Maintain a collection of publishers and vendor catalogs in the library media center .8. Coordinate daily operation of building library media center. In the area of Planning, Curriculum, and Reporting, the library media specialist shall: 1. Prepare an annual budget for the library media center and submit to proper administration .. Participate in curriculum planning by collaborating with classroom teachers to design, implement, and evaluate instruction units .. Introduce and publicize resources and prepare bibliographies .. Be informed and knowledgeable about school philosophy, curriculum instruction, and the total educational program .. Promote principles of student confidentiality, students\ rights to read, and intellectual freedom .. Prepare annual state report including an evaluation of the levels reached and recommendations for development. In the area of Instruction, the library media specialist shall: 1. Provide orientation to staff and students through in-service programs .. Provide information literacy skills instruction 3. Convey enthusiasm for books and reading through specific activities and individual guidance promoting the development of reading skills and appreciation. In the area of Technology, the library media specialist shall: 1. Promote the use of technology as an information resource .. Train students and teachers in the effective use of technology .. Serve on building and district-wide technology committees .. Instruct students to be discerning, responsible, and ethical users of information .. Apply appropriate technologies to the management of library resources, including annual inventory .. Maintain an up-to-date audio-visual inventory. In the area of Professionalism, the library media specialist shall: 1. Be informed about national and state legislation affecting the school library media program and apply this knowledge to library media center operations .. Keep educationally and professionally informed by participating in professional organizations, course work, workshops, conferences, and by the reading of professional literature .. Work to coordinate resources and activities with area libraries .. Attend faculty meeting and other appropriate staff meetings .. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents and patrons. EVALUATION Performance of this position will be evaluated by the building administrator according to board policies and the Warrensburg. R-VI School District adopted model of Performance Based Librarian Evaluation.
