The Opportunity. WSDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Vancouver, WA. These positions serve as members of the Southwest Region (SWR) Striping, Raised Pavement Marker (RPM), and Pavement Marking Maintenance Team, supporting safe and effective transportation systems throughout the region. In this journey-level role, incumbents perform pavement marking operations, roadway sign installation and repair, and other maintenance activities that support roadway safety. Work is performed as part of a collaborative, safety-focused team environment. What to Expect. These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic; HMW 2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Typical schedules are day or night shift, Monday through Thursday, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Travel is expected for these regionwide positions. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:Perform pavement marking operations, including loading and unloading paint and reflective beads, driving the striper, and operating white and yellow paint guns. Install and maintain raised pavement markers (RP - Ms), including loading materials, removing damaged markers, and installing new RP - Ms. Install thermoplastic pavement markings such as stop bars, crosswalks, and turn arrows. Operate equipment including knuckle boom trucks, forklifts, pre-warning message vehicles, road warriors, and truck-mounted attenuators (TM - As). Build, install, repair, clean, and brush around regulatory, warning, guide, and informational signs, and maintain guideposts and delineators. Repair impact attenuators by replacing damaged cartridges, side panels, nose pieces, and other components to restore highway safety standards. Use a reflectometer to take field readings and measure the reflectivity of pavement markings. Assist with winter operations and emergency response, including snow and ice removal, debris removal, and other maintenance activities as needed. Operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B, or C highway equipment, power tools and hand tools for maintenance operations. Qualifications. To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:Highway Maintenance: Practical knowledge of highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes. Equipment Operation: Skilled in operating and maintaining various Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles following WSDOT standards. Proven ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites. Traffic Control & Work Zone: Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels. Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training. Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS). Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication. Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field. Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision-making and leadership skills. Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others. In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required: A valid driver's license, with the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement within one (1) year of hire. Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid/ CPR Certification within six (6) months of hire. Ability to obtain a valid traffic control/flagging card within six (6) months of hire. Ability to report in service to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call. Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, perform emergency callouts/stand-by, and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water. It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:Traffic Control & Flagging: Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging. Best Management Practices: Experience and/or training on related Best Management Practices (BMP). Local Area Knowledge: Knowledge of the surrounding area. Multi-Discipline Maintenance Experience: Well-rounded experience in multiple disciplines. Important Notes These are non-permanent opportunities, expected to last up to 12 months. These positions are not eligible for remote work. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
