The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Scientific Illustration, beginning August 2026. We seek candidates whose interdisciplinary research and professional practice focus on translating complex scientific concepts into accessible, accurate, and compelling visual communication across expansive media. This position offers opportunities to collaborate with scholars and practitioners across the arts, humanities, and sciences to advance research communication and public understanding of scientific ideas and phenomena. The successful candidate will teach primarily at the undergraduate level, with opportunities for graduate instruction related to scientific or medical science illustration, visual storytelling for science communication, and related topics. The typical teaching load will be four courses (2/2, 12 credits) per academic year. The candidate will maintain an active program of creative scholarship, mentor students, contribute to curricular development, and participate in departmental, college, and university service. This position supports the School’s efforts to expand its program in scientific visualization and visual communication. Additional Requirements - Candidates with a non-terminal master’s degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their respective field and be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire. - Legal authorization to work in the United States at the time of appointment. Relevant/ Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Ideal Candidates will demonstrate: - A research or creative practice grounded in Scientific Illustration that demonstrates effective communication across multiple media. - Evidence of related research or professional engagement in scientific or natural science illustration, visualization, or science communication. - Evidence of successful college-level teaching or mentoring related to scientific or medical illustration. - A commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary scholarship and engagement. - Critical engagement with the social, environmental, or ethical dimensions of information or research findings. - Additional research and/or pedagogical strength in areas such as: digital painting and drawings, information graphics, visual communication design, 3 D modeling and printing, interactive/motion graphics and animation, color techniques, or emerging technologies.
