City Manager's Office is now recruiting for the position of a Design Intern. THE DEPARTMENT - In FY 2026, The City Manager's Office manages a budget of $26.6 million and 70.54 full-time equivalents. The mission of the City Manager Department is to implement programs in accordance with City Council policies, the City Charter and Municipal Code, while providing organizational leadership for effective delivery of services to the community. Focus areas and programs include City Council support; Executive Management; Public Information & Communications; Intergovernmental Affairs; Global Engagement & Protocols; Arts & Culture Support; Cannabis Oversight; the City’s Equity initiatives; Homeless Strategy & Partnerships; Special Events & Filming; and Sustainability & Climate Change. THE POSITION - The City of Long Beach, Office of the City Manager has an immediate opening for a part-time, unclassified, at-will Design Intern (Senior Administrative Intern) to serve in the Office of Public Affairs and Communications. Under the direction of the Public Affairs Officer, the Design Intern will produce high-quality communication materials and play a pivotal role in visual storytelling related to the City's priorities, initiatives, programs and services. The position is a hybrid schedule in which daily activities are generally conducted by telecommuting, however it is required that the Design Intern be ready and able to work in person for certain activities, such as, but not limited to, press conferences, community events, site visits, activations, onsite trainings and onsite meetings. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Perform all aspects of graphic design, including concept development, layout, finishing work and digital production. Effectively communicate City messages through thoughtful, accessible and engaging visual design. Design and produce a wide range of materials, including but not limited to:Social media and other digital communications graphics. Reports, brochures, pamphlets and postcards. Invitations and mailers. Presentations and digital templates. Posters, signage, banners and other print or digital materials. Logos and visual identities. Collaborate with communications teams to ensure all materials align with the City’s brand standards and strategic objectives. Assist in preparing digital assets for publication on web and social media platforms. Support layout and production for special reports, City campaigns and community events. Maintain organized project files, templates and asset libraries for ongoing use. Participate in team brainstorming sessions and contribute creative ideas for public information and outreach projects. Perform related duties as required, including administrative or production support for the Office of Public Affairs and Communications. Coordinate with language access to ensure equity. REQUIREMENTS TO FILE EDUCATION:Current Juniors or Seniors enrolled in an undergraduate program or individuals enrolled in a graduate program with a major in Graphic Design or related field from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher (proof required). OR - Recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program (within one year of application submission) from an accredited college or university with a degree in Graphic Design or related field (proof required). IDEAL CANDIDATE - Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, In. Design, Acrobat). Strong understanding of layout, visual hierarchy, typography, color theory and composition. Ability to design within established brand standards and across various platforms while bringing fresh, creative ideas. Experience designing for web and social media platforms, including image optimization and layout best practices. Experience producing print materials, including, but not limited to brochure, pamphlets, reports, signage and presentations. Basic knowledge of digital accessibility and commitment to inclusive design principles. Commitment to equity, inclusion and public service values through design. Knowledge of video editing or motion graphics tool (e.g., Adobe Premiere, After Effects) is a plus. Illustration skills are a plus, including the ability to create custom graphics or iconography when needed. Strong attention to detail, organization and accountability in meeting deadlines. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to shifting priorities. Ability to coordinate with print vendors and preparing final production files. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, leadership and partners. Ability to take direction and apply feedback constructively while also working independently. Enthusiasm for public service and helping communicate messages that inform and engage the Long Beach community.
