The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Game Program Technician located in Tok, Alaska! What you will be doing: The Program Technician serves as the primary public contact for the Tok ADF&G Field Office, which manages Game Management Units 12 and 20 E. This position also provides administrative, clerical, and operational support to the area wildlife biologists and field staff. The incumbent is responsible for answering public inquiries by phone, email, and at the front counter, providing accurate information about local wildlife populations, land access, and hunting, fishing, trapping, waterfowl, and subsistence regulations. The position issues ADF&G permits and harvest tickets, sells licenses and big game tags, and collects, records, and manages hunt and harvest reports. The position will require the incumbent to be current on recent ADF&G advisory announcemetnts, emergency orders, and Board of Game actions and proposals. This position performs data entry, database management and archiving, and assists in monitoring hunts and updating public information resources. The incumbent supports field staff with administrative and clerical tasks, helps coordinate management meetings, and assists with general office operations, including maintenance of office equipment and supplies. The incumbent will be expected to work with field staff to ensure essential public services are available during posted hours. The Program Technician is responsible for sealing and measuring horns, skulls, and bear and furbearer hides as well as collecting biological samples from specimens. Fieldwork duties may include assisting field staff as needed to support wildlife management activities. The Tok Area ADF&G office has a staff of 4 and manages over 20,000 square miles of Alaska wilderness in Game Management Units 12 and 20 E. The working environment you can expect: This position is at the ADF&G office in Tok, AK. The daily work environment involves effective communication and teamwork with coworkers as well as regular use of computers while assisting the public in person and over the phone at the information desk in the office. Office based work will require exposure to biological specimens such as raw furs and hides, skulls, horns, antlers and biological substances such as blood, hair, and tissues. This position may require infrequent travel within the State (normally one or two trips of up to 3 days during a calendar year). This position may present limited opportunities for personal leave during high visitor traffic months, including portions of summer fishing and fall hunting seasons. This position may occasionally require field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, and low-level flight in small aircraft. This position works a regular 5-day work week (M-F) 8:00-4:30 (7.5 hours/day), with a 1-hour lunch break. Who we are looking for: We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:Public service skills: Ability to provide clear, respectful, and accurate information to a wide range of user groups, including explaining ADF&G hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations. Demonstrates sound judgment when handling information provided by the public or gathered by the department and maintains confidentiality in accordance with department policies and ethical standards. Office Technology Skills: Skilled in using computers and office equipment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, phone systems, and printers. Ability to gather, organize, and summarize data to support biologists with reporting needs. Ability to organize and maintain files, track permits and reports, manage office supplies and equipment, assist with program scheduling, meeting coordination, administrative and accounting tasks, and the accurate presentation of public information resources. Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with field based and regional staff to acccomplish goals. Experience setting priorities, breaking down complex tasks, and communicating ideas in an organized and understandable way, both verbally and in writing. Minimum Qualifications
Two years of office clerical experience or technical experience related to fish, wildlife or habitat resources;OR - One year of experience providing advanced clerical services based on established procedures, precedents, and policies in administrative, informative, and/or programmatic functions. This experience includes work such as an Office Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Substitution: Postsecondary education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
