The Head of Technical Services Department at Georgetown University Library provides strategic leadership and operational management of all technical services functions, encompassing acquisitions, metadata, electronic resources and serials management and preservation. This position oversees the overall administration and coordination of technical services operations and is responsible for establishing and implementing library-wide policies, standards, and procedures that support effective collection management. It manages personnel functions and oversees the Library’s materials and related budgets. It also serves as the primary liaison with vendors, and acts as the chief technical resource for acquisitions, metadata, electronic resources, and discovery systems. This position is a member of the Leadership Council and it coordinates technical services practices across library units, campus libraries, and consortial partners. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:Provide leadership in formulating department goals and objectives; plan, coordinate and facilitate departmental activities;Work with unit heads to develop and implement policies and procedures to continuously improve departmental workflows and streamline work;Administers the Department’s personnel agenda, providing leadership and guidance in staff training and development, and supervises all departmental personnel directly or indirectly. Manage and oversee the spending of library materials budget, access, bindery and OCLC budgets, approximately $6 million dollars. Serve as the primary Technical Services contact with acquisition vendors; establish and maintain business relationships with vendors and assess vendor performance;Serve as the chief technical resource for acquisitions, metadata, electronic resources/serials management, and discovery/access to and preservation of library materials for students and faculty;Coordinate technical services functions and practice among units/departments within the Library, other campus libraries and local consortia. Work Interactions. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Digital Services and Technology. The position provides direct supervision for 3 FTEs and indirect supervision for 10 FTEs. The position is a member of the Leadership Council and works closely with other Department Heads and colleagues from other divisions The candidate will maintain close working relationships with colleagues from other campus libraries and local consortia, vendors, University Finance, Accounts Payable, and Procurement Departments. Requirements and Qualifications. Masters in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution. Minimum 5 years of successful, progressively responsible professional experience in technical services related work preferably within an academic library setting. Minimum 3 years supervisory and management experience Experience with managing library materials budgets, fund accounting, preparing and analyzing data and creating reports for internal and external reporting. Experience with vendor relations, negotiation, and management of license agreements. Demonstrated ability to lead in a rapidly-changing environment and to use technology in creative ways to solve problems and create efficiencies. Experience with planning and managing complex projects in an academic setting Demonstrated knowledge of trends and best practices in technical services. Knowledge and experience working with cataloging standards and resources such as RDA, AACR 2, LCSH, Classification Web, MARC 21, and other current and emerging metadata standards. Knowledge and experience with integrated library systems, specifically Alma/ Primo preferred. Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, students, and staff. Preferred Requirements and Qualifications:Experience with descriptive metadata for digitized and born-digital content. Familiarity with metadata schemas such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS. Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g., OAI-PMH, SRW/ U)Experience with managing the electronic resources lifecycle. Knowledge of preservation of library materials and disaster response in libraries. Work Mode Designation. This position has been designated as Hybrid.
