The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Solid Waste Specialist Trainee dedicated to learning how to protect the health of Pennsylvania's citizens and environment through conducting diligent inspections of solid waste facilities. DESCRIPTION OF WORK As a Solid Waste Specialist Trainee, you will participate in a 12 month formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a Solid Waste Specialist. Upon successful completion of the training program, you will be promoted to a Solid Waste Specialist. Within this role, you will learn the skills necessary to enforce solid waste rules and regulations relative to the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, processing, and disposal of solid waste. Your duties will focus on hazardous waste, residual waste, municipal waste, infectious and pathological waste, and emergency response waste. Additional areas of focus include learning how to review permit applications and plans to determine if the proposed plans are in compliance with departmental regulations, as well as collecting samples of various media and wastes to establish compliance status. Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. This position may require travel. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Williamsport. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes). REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS - Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or. A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or. An equivalent combination of experience and training. Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree. Special Requirements:This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license. Other Requirements:You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position.
