Provide leadership in the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and evaluating of perfusion services at BJH as well as all responsibilities of a staff perfusionist providing cardiopulmonary and mechanical circulatory support for patients with emphasis on complex procedures including support for heart failure and non-cardiac procedures and level 1 trauma support. Manages perfusion services at busy 24/7 level 1 trauma Hospital with over 1600 perfusion cases annually with the Chief directly overseeing 100 cases annually. Responsibilities. Manages BJH perfusionists including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of the BJH perfusionists meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership. Maintains optimal communication, close cooperation and consultation with attending physicians in the extracorporeal perfusion process. Oversight of program including the heart-lung machine and extracorporeal units used during open heart surgical procedures and documentation of activities on the perfusion record. Ensures quality of care of the perfusion process by implementing, communicating, and/or developing philosophies of standards of care, enforcing adherence to organizational, departmental and outside regulatory requirements and monitoring and/or measuring financial, operational and clinical outcomes against standards. Directs and ensures the delivery of safe, appropriate patient care through effective leadership skills. Oversees the design, implementation and participation of the education and training programs for cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal support specialists, physicians and critical support personnel. Directs education of perfusion students through clinical affiliations (accredited perfusion education programs). Leads the development of departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets and having direct responsibility for adhering to those goals. This includes responding to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals. Manages training and support of staff in use of variety of heart failure and ventricular support devices transplants (heart, lung, liver) as well as, handling high dose chemo therapeutic cases, aortic dissections and aneurysms and the support for clinical trials and investigational devices.
