Public Works Supervisor positions plan, assign, and supervise the work of several crews of a major unit or division engaged in the construction and maintenance of public right-of-way or public works facilities; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES:Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). Public Works Supervisor positions may be required to work in confined spaces and may require a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Certification and/or a Confined Space Certificate within six months from the date of hire.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated. EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time experience in the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of street, water, sewer, park, public right-of-way, or public facilities, which MUST include two years of supervisory or crew leading experience. Qualifying supervisory or crew leading experience must include ALL of the following:Experience must be at the level of a Utility Worker II with the City of San Diego (a position which leads and participates in the work of a crew to perform semi-skilled construction and maintenance work; assist skilled trades workers and repair technicians in the replacement, installation, maintenance, and repair of various airports, sewer, street, public works facilities, and parks by performing the less skilled tasks in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, welding, plastering, cement finishing, and masonry) or higher. Providing direction or guidance to other workers on a crew or project in the construction or maintenance and repair of street, water, sewer, park, public rights-of-way, or public facilities. NOTES:Experience supervising/crew leading the maintenance of buildings or park grounds (e.g., mowing, weeding, planting) is NOT qualifying. City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. HIGHLY DESIRABLE:Experience with maintenance and management of street sweeping in the public right-of- way. Proficient in using computer software including Word, Excel, and SAP. Public Works Management Certificate issued from the American Public Works Association or the Maintenance Superintendents Association. Associate's Degree in Public Works Management. A California Unrestricted Class A or B Driver’s License. Experience with tools and equipment used in the public works/construction trade industry. Experience applying safe work practices.
