The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for the full-time position of Traffic Technician in our Public Works Department. The position performs manual labor and skilled work involving the maintenance of traffic signs, the traffic signal system, fiber optic network, streetlights, and performs related duties as required as an Equipment Operator under supervision. The ideal candidate will have prior training or experience in sign installation and fabrication, electrical technology or fiber optic communication. Beginning Salary Information:$33.54 - $36.98 per hour depending on relevant work experience, with an excellent benefit package. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Maintenance and repair of traffic signs, traffic signals, streetlights and fiber optic network. Responsible to utilize, interpret, and implement the requirements of the Manual on Uniform Traiffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and related laws or ordinances to fabricate, install, and maintain traffic control signs throughout the city. Perform emergency repairs of traffic signs and/or traffic signals on site, including on-call rotation and/or call-out work after hours. Assist with completion of duties associated with Iowa One-Call locating requirements. Snow removal and ice control, including possible emergency or extra-hours response. Entry Requirements and Skills High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in performing semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks and the operation of light, medium, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience, training or experience in sign installation, sign fabrication, electrical technology or fiber optic communication preferred. Shall possess (or be able to obtain within one year) certification through the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) in Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Safety, Sign and Pavement Marking Technician Level 1, and Traffic Signal Technician Level I. Must possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of Iowa upon hire. Will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL with airbrakes endorsement within 90 calendar days of hire date. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions. Pass a pre-employment DOT physical, DOT drug screen and background check required. WORKING CONDITIONS:Generally works in field environment. Climbs and walks over uneven terrain. Performs outside work in all kinds of weather conditions. Operates equipment having varying degrees of noise and vibration. Work up to 40 ft above the ground, with appropriate safety equipment and practices. Required to perform duties during off-hour emergencies and weekends. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be able to kneel, squat, climb, and walk, lie on a creeper and work overhead. Must be able to step up 12 to 18 inches into employer's equipment. Must be able to climb in and out of aerial lift truck and bucket (maximum weight person including materials cannot exceed 300 lbs.). Must be able to move up and down ladders and stairs.
