The Coordinator for Student-Athlete Transition and Support will coach students through a successful transition and integration into and throughout their time at Christopher Newport. The Coordinator will provide intentional outreach and individualized student support, particularly to current and disaffiliated student-athletes. They should demonstrate a commitment to understanding and working with diverse student populations and will serve as a resource for student-athletes on campus. Reporting to the Director of Student-Athlete Transition and Support, the Coordinator performs an active role within the Division of Student Affairs and strives to help the team achieve its goals and directives. Work Tasks Oversee a caseload of student athletes and disaffiliated student athletes, providing individual student support and timely follow-up of Captains Care referrals. This includes coordinating internal and external resources, providing on-going communication, conducting on-going risk assessments, monitoring progress for persisting and athletic eligibility, and developing and implementing intervention plans based on the individual needs of each undergraduate student. Will keep detailed records of meetings with students and intervention methods and communicate with the Director of Student-Athlete Transition and Support and appropriate coaching staff as necessary. Coordinate and present academic and life skill lessons to students in small groups, larger workshops, and/or one-on-one sessions to include, but not limited to, topics such as new student transition, time management, learning styles, test taking strategies, study skills, note taking strategies, communication and conflict resolution, and post-graduate preparation. Responsible for the daily management of Study Hall including: hiring of study hall monitors, completion of employment paperwork, execution of an effective study hall model, documentation of study hall attendance, and ongoing assessment of effectiveness and outcomes of study hall. Collaborates with the Director of Student-Athlete Transition and Support to create and send out the weekly newsletter (“Monday Message”) to all student-athletes. Meets with prospective student-athletes and their families during official and unofficial visits to campus to discuss the goals, vision, philosophy, and expectations of the university, the athletics department and Christopher Newport’s student-athlete support services. Remains aware of current trends in the field of student affairs and academic success. Research and remains current on topics involving the student-athlete experience, academic performance to include, but not limited to, motivational techniques, time management, learning styles and study skills strategies, transitions from high school to college, retention, career readiness, and post-collegiate transitions. Demonstrates an understanding of the Student-Athlete Handbook, Undergraduate Catalogs, academic standing and graduation requirements, course registration deadlines and procedures, and NCAA eligibility requirements. However, this position is not responsible for reporting NCAA eligibility, and is not responsible for providing academic curriculum advising/course registration services to the student-athlete. Assists with departmental research and assessment efforts with a focus on assessing student satisfaction with services provided, student-learning outcomes, current trends, and evaluates the quality of service delivered to ascertain valuable feedback that shapes Student-Athlete Transition and Support Services. Uses data and information gathered to contribute to unit and departmental decision-making and reports. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the Division of Student Affairs, and the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. Represents the Division of Student Affairs and Student-Athlete Transition and Support Services on select committees and working groups. Participates in university events that support the University, to include but not limited to: Orientation, Commencements, Move-In, Admission events, Senior Athletic Banquet, Chi Alpha Sigma Induction Ceremonies, and other special events. Works cooperatively with administrative units in Student Affairs, Enrollment, Student Success, Admission, and Auxiliary Services on university retention initiatives. Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Students First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position. Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the implementation of safety regulations and applicable standards, processes, and programs established for employees under your supervision. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities”. A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the University Police who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must be highly motivated, innovative and creative. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines and organize work to ensure the timely delivery of services and support. Ability to foster positive internal and external public relations. Ability to work both independently and on a team. Ability to consult with faculty, administrators, students and families. Ability to quickly master a variety of computer applications, including experience with spreadsheets and word processing. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. This job entails lifting and moving objects. Ability to work nights, weekends. Required Education Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree. Additional Consideration - Education Experience Required Experience working with students in a mentoring, coaching, or advising capacity. Experience in managing multiple tasks. Additional Consideration - Experience Experience with student advising and/or coaching students in a University setting, particularly student athletes. Customer service experience with a diverse population of constituents. Experience facilitating workshops, information sessions, and other intervention-type programs, and managing departmental resources. Salary Information Starting at $50,887 Commensurate with Education and Experience.
