(Illustrative only)Operates a variety of heavy trucks and equipment with manual transmissions and hand tools; assists in maintaining and handling cash box; receiving payments; balancing and accounting for cash; and, recording and maintaining various records for transactions; performs manual labor assignments; works on construction and maintenance projects; assist in repairing roadway surfaces, culverts, headwalls, shoulders, and guardrails;assists with the construction and repairs of building fixtures; assists with the inspection, performance, and routine maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems; controls traffic in work zones;completes required daily logs and prepares reports; provides on-call, 24-7 services on a predetermined rotation schedule; regular and reliable attendance is required;performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of construction, maintenance, trades, or heavy equipment experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience;must possess and maintain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for the operation of combination vehicles with manual transmissions;requires successful completion of a background check and must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: operational procedures of Solid Waste transfer stations; operational procedures for waste tire collection facility, including differing types of tires; operational and maintenance procedures for air curtain burner, green waste grinder, loader, excavator and backhoe; Yuma County organization, operations, policies and procedures; methods, tools, materials and equipment commonly used for road construction and maintenance and building trades; inspection and preventive maintenance practices applying to mechanical equipment; traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in heavy truck and equipment operation; occupational hazards, OSHA regulations and other safety requirements and practices including first aid and CPR;signing for road construction/maintenance and flagging procedures; dust control products, and asphalt materials and application methods;soil classifications and compaction. Skill in: performing pre- and post-operational equipment checks, and identifying mechanical problems; operating tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment involving complexed maneuvering and adjusting of levers and devices, the satisfactory operation of manual transmissions, which requires a high degree of coordination and skill in manipulation; servicing and maintaining construction equipment and tools according to standard operating and safety procedures; Identifying materials not accepted at transfer site, i.e., liquids, hazardous waste, commercial waste, etc;using the tools and equipment for plumbing, carpentry, masonry, electrical, and metalwork; performing calculations and measurements involved in construction and maintenance projects;maintaining traffic control for a work zone; establishing effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public;following written and verbal instructions. Ability to be exposed to exhaust and chemical fumes, oil, grease and hazardous materials; lift 50-100 pounds;work in varying extreme weather conditions; work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays; recognize hazardous conditions and react appropriately;establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; follow written and verbal instructions;stand and bend (30%);walk and stoop (20%);perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without a reasonable accommodation. Work Environment. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; generally the job requires 30% bending, 20% walking, 20% stooping and 30% standing;the job is performed under varying extreme weather conditions and exposed to exhaust and chemical fumes, oil and hazardous materials.
