The Safety Technician-Emergency Department (ED) supports the Emergency Department Managers to monitor and address environment of care factors that impact patient care, faculty, and staff, to ensure patient and staff safety and efficient department operations. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Maintains awareness of unit readiness related to medical-surgical supplies, linen, stretchers, oxygen tanks, crash carts, HLD log, scopes, and other emergency equipment. Escalates deficiencies to the ED Manager .. Rounds unit/treatment area each morning utilizing ED Environment of Care check list for cleanliness, supplies and equipment in proper location, fire, and safety compliance. Addresses and resolves issues that do not require communication with an external department. Reports concerns that cannot be immediately addressed and resolved to ED Manager. Submits completed check list to ED Manager on a weekly basis .. Inspects each patient treatment room at least monthly to evaluate equipment for functionality and need for repair or replacement as well as overall physical condition of the room with respect to need for patch/paint/sinks caulked etc .. Monitors department equipment to assure proper use and maintenance. Performs minor maintenance, e.g., batteries, on hand replacement parts. Identifies and communicates ongoing equipment concerns (i.e., consistent battery malfunction, broken cord, staff training deficits) to ED Manager .. Makes recommendations to the ED Manager concerning the modification, improvement, or removal of any department equipment, facilities, or machinery that is hazardous to employee safety or health .. Identifies opportunities to re-use or recycle material to minimize consumption of new materials, minimize waste, or to convert waste to by-products .. Achieves and maintains operations level competency for HAZMAT procedures and decontamination. Serve as member of HAZMAT PPE training team .. Performs a monthly inventory of personal protection equipment (PPE) and other equipment required for efficient decontamination procedures. Recommends procurement of PPE or other related items to the ED Manager .. Serves as active member of ED Emergency Preparedness committee, participating in policy and procedure development, training, drills, and after-action reviews .0. Consistently participates in Unit and Hospital safety huddles .1. Participates in quality improvement projects and teams related to environment of care, supplies and equipment. EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: - High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety, or other health related field preferred. - Three (3) years of related experience in a health care environment. - Knowledge of Safety Regulations including but not limited to:o Workplace Safety Trainingo Hazardous Materials Handlingo OSHA/ EPA regulationso TJC, CMS, Life Safety associated inspection Additional Information Organization: Henry Ford Hospital - Detroit Main Campus Department: Emergency Dept. - Support Shift: Variable Union Code: Not Applicable
