To provide sub-journeyman level installation, maintenance, and service of electrical/electronic systems skills. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned electrical/electronic and related duties. Description of Duties Completes work orders and requests materials as needed. Assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of electrical components, including, but not limited to, electrical motors, generators, circuit breakers, outlets. Assists in identifying, diagnosing, and troubleshooting electrical malfunctions and reports to licensed electricians on any issues. Assists with conduit bending, wire pulling, and minor electrical device termination. Prepares, cleans, and organizes work areas, and transports materials to off campus sites. Adheres to all safety codes, regulations, and building codes (e.g., NEC). May be required to perform manual labor such as digging or heavy lifting or other duties as required. Assists other trades in the performance of assigned duties. May assist in reviewing blueprints and/or working drawings. May be required to be on call, work weekends and/or holidays as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervision Received Close supervision from assigned supervisor. Supervision Given Direct supervision of assigned staff. Required Education High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Education Vocational school on electrical and electronic training or electrician apprenticeship. Licenses/ Certifications Texas electrician apprentice license. As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s). Required Experience Two (2) years of experience in electrical maintenance, repair, or installation under a licensed electrician. Preferred Experience More years than the required experience. Equipment Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electrical trade and the use of meters and other test equipment. Use of University trucks, utility carts, forklift and heavy machinery applicable to the trade. Knowledge of bucket truck, trencher, and backhoe operation. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exposure to outside environments, hot, dry, wet, and cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Danger of falls, electrical shock and burns, and hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Other To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
