Position: # P 11097 Full-time: 40 hours. Pay: $22.64 Location: 37th & O Street NW Washington, DC 20057 Job Overview. This position operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, including roll-off trucks, side loaders, rear loaders, and mechanical loaders (e.g., backhoe and forklift), as well as other assigned vehicles, to support the safe, efficient, and compliant management of solid waste and recycling operations. Additionally, this position is required to support the department with any snow removal operations as needed. The candidate is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of refuse and recycling vehicles, collecting solid waste materials from designated areas, inspecting waste for contaminants and hazardous materials. Subsequently, transport the collected materials to transfer stations and other waste management facilities. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: Maintain daily records of the collection activities and contribute to route scheduling by assisting in the determination of pick-up points. Conduct daily checks on all university trash-compactor units, ensuring optimal performance by maintaining hydraulic fluid levels, and promptly reporting any malfunctions to the unit supervisor. Schedule repairs and maintenance of trucks and containers. Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting and emptying heavy recycling and solid waste containers, processing materials, and ensuring the cleanliness and disinfection of recycling and solid waste vehicles, collection areas, and containers. Dedicate efforts to ensuring that all recycling and solid waste areas are not only clean but also fully functional and operational. Additionally, handle other assigned duties with diligence and commitment. Work Interactions. The incumbent works mainly with employees in the Recycling and Waste Management unit and Planning and Facilities Management department, but as work is being performed, may interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus. It is important that the employee work cooperatively with fellow employees to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans. Requirements and Qualifications. HS Diploma/ GED; two or more years of commercial or heavy vehicle driving experience. Valid driver's license issued by DC, Maryland, or Virginia. Clean driving record. Valid CDL issued by the District of Columbia, Virginia or Maryland. Department of Transportation Health Certificate (DOT) required. Two years of experience performing general labor or manual work. Experience directly related to recycling and solid waste management preferred. Comprehensive knowledge of traffic laws and regulations. Must be able to operate heavy equipment, to include driving the vehicle, operating and programming the interior compactors, operating the lift gate, the steam cleaner and the air brakes. Must be able to learn categories of recyclable materials and must be educated about proper management of hazardous waste. Must have good verbal communication skills. Must be highly motivated, able to work independently and concerned with recycling and environmental issues. Work Mode Designation. This position has been designated as On-Campus.
