Respiratory Therapists are licensed health care professionals that provide direct, general through critical cardiopulmonary respiratory care to patients of all ages with acute and chronic Cardiopulmonary disease under supervision of the Respiratory Care Medical Director/physicians and Respiratory Care Services Director. The respiratory therapist, a multidisciplinary care team member, plans, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of respiratory care and acts as a resource person to other therapists, nurses, and physicians regarding the respiratory care of patients. Essential Functions 1. Performs patient assessments and recommends treatment modalities 2. Utilizes critical thinking regarding priority of work, changes in patient condition, evaluating patient’s response to care and emergency situations 3. Consults with physicians to recommend changes in therapy, based on evaluation of the patient .. Performs punctures to obtain blood specimens and blood gas analysis to evaluate the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide and the acid-base balance, or p. H, for diagnosis and monitoring of different medical conditions .. Responds to all rapid response and cardiopulmonary arrest alerts/codes and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and airway care .. Administers respiratory care modalities and maintains knowledge and competencies of various methods of respiratory care delivery, including equipment, medications, etc .. Understands and communicates the possible complications associated with the procedures .. Performs ventilator management. Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning .. Educates patients, families and other healthcare team members to maximize delivery of patient respiratory care and recuperation .0. Educates students, i.e. respiratory, nursing, nutrition and medical, on respiratory best clinical practices 11. Works with the multidiscipline health care team in identifying and planning of post discharge respiratory care needs .2. Other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS - Minimum Education:Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care program, Associates in Science or Associates in Applied Science program. Preferred Education:Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care program, Bachelors in Science. Licensure/ Certification: - Registered through the National Board of Respiratory Care - Respiratory Care license through Ohio Medical Board - BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP Certifications. Minimum Experience: - 1-year experience working in acute setting preferred - New respiratory care program graduate. WORKING CONDITIONS - Normal patient care environment with little exposure to noise, dust, temperature and the like. - Lifts weights of approximately 20 lbs., must be able to move freely a large “H” size cylinder of oxygen on a cart. - Substantial physical effort exerted up to fifty percent of work time. - Ability to walk, stand, and bend more than eighty percent of time. - Frequent (fifty to eighty percent of work time) exposure to adverse conditions. WORK SCHEDULE - Respiratory care department is operational 24.0 hrs/7 days/nights, Monday through Sunday, 36.0 hrs., with weekend and holiday rotation. Flexibility in schedule/hours is possible. May need to work additional hours beyond regular scheduled 36 hours a week on occasion. PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS 1.
