The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled general trades work associated with maintenance and repair of city buildings, equipment, and related facilities within the Utility Department.
Essential Functions
Performs general remodeling, repair, and maintenance work on city buildings, equipment, and related facilities; performs skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work functions involving building remodeling/renovation, carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general repairs. Ensures that remodeling work, maintenance work, and operation of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Plans/coordinates remodeling projects; inspects existing buildings, reviews layout of proposed projects, and makes calculations to determine necessary work and materials; schedules work; inspects completed projects/work. Conducts remodeling and larger repair/maintenance projects and performs associated tasks, which may include remodeling/repairing building structures, building new office space, installing portable walls, framing walls/partitions, hanging/finishing drywall, installing/repairing doors and windows, replacing floor/wall tile, installing and repairing fences, installing hurricane shutters, repairing roof leaks, repairing holes in concrete walkways, mixing/pouring cement, or cutting concrete. Performs various electrical tasks, such as troubleshooting electrical problems, testing circuits, repairing electrical equipment, repairing air conditioning units, installing electrical fixtures, installing electrical conduit, running wires/cables, installing telephone jacks, replacing bulbs/batteries or recycling lamps/bulbs. Performs various plumbing tasks, such as installing/repairing appliances/equipment, installing/repairing plumbing fixtures, installing backflow valves, repairing plumbing leaks, clearing water lines and drains, installing/repairing sewer lines, cleaning sewer drain traps or cutting pipes. Performs various painting tasks, such as preparing interior/exterior surfaces for painting, sanding surfaces, pressure washing surfaces, applying paint to surfaces using brush or sprayer, repairing painted surfaces, removing graffiti, measuring paint projects, or moving/rearranging furniture. Performs various welding work, which may include cutting metal or fabricating metal parts/components. Performs various general/manual work tasks associated with department projects, which may include moving furniture, installing appliances/equipment, climbing ladders, cutting wood, drilling holes, hanging holiday banners, digging holes/trenches or lifting/moving heavy materials. May operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a utility vehicle, aerial lift equipment, electric lift hydraulic lift, generator, compressor, vacuum filter, welding torch, welding machine, sander, pressure cleaner, paint sprayer, table saw, jig saw, circular saw, drill, drill press, ladder, scaffolding, shovel, pick axe, saws, pipe cutter, plumbing wrench, vacuum cleaner, backflow valve tester, gauges, meters, carpentry tools, roofing tools, plumbing tools, mechanic tools, and diagnostic instruments. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Gathers necessary equipment, tools, parts, or supplies to conduct projects; initiates orders for new or replacement materials; transports, loads and unloads equipment and materials used in projects. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Inspects/tests machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements; reports problem situations. Receives and prepares various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, vehicle maintenance reports, blanket reports, invoices, receipts, accident reports, safety reports, vehicle/equipment records, diagrams, blueprints, layouts, maps, codes, drawings, special instructions, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Uses department computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to record maintenance activities via work orders. Uses system to record issues and keeps records up dated. Checks system against assets in the field to ensure CMMS is up-to-date. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendors, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintains a current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or valid equivalent; and. Three (3) years experience in building construction, remodeling, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, building maintenance, and/or roofing; and Possess (or obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s license.

Ability to understand and quickly and accurately follow brief oral and written instructions on moderately complex matters.
