The School of the Arts/ Department of Music at the University of New Orleans invites applications for an Open Professor (tenure-track to tenured) position in Music with an expertise in Jazz improvisation, theory, performance and/or composition. A secondary expertise in music business, music technology and/or music production is also highly desirable. The successful candidate will be an inspiring individual dedicated to mentorship, with a deep understanding of the history of Black American music and jazz education, and a visionary approach to the future of both. This position is responsible for 12 academic units per semester (4/4). The typical teaching load is 9 units per semester, with the expectation of service and research/creative activity to fulfill the remaining 3 units. Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in jazz as needed, as well as other courses that are within the candidate’s secondary area of expertise. Other responsibilities include audition reviews, participation in the Jazz at the Sandbar series, recruitment, community outreach, inclusion on department, school, college and/or university committees and other support of the administrative functions of the unit. Required Qualifications. Substantial evidence of national/international recognition in the field of jazz performance, arranging or composition. Masters degree or equivalent professional experience in the field of jazz. Evidence of teaching excellence. Preferred Qualifications. Demonstratable expertise in a secondary music-related field. A successful history of grant writing, fundraising, entrepreneurship and/or community building. Salary Information. Commensurate with Experience, but the hiring range, depending on qualifications and experience, is approximately $60,000-$70,000. This position is subject to budgetary approval. Review Date. Jazz Studies at UNOUNO Jazz Studies was founded in 1989 by the beloved New Orleans patriarch of jazz, Ellis Marsalis. It quickly became the preeminent place in the region for aspiring student artists to hone their skills. 37 years into its legacy, the program has mentored Grammy winners, noted film and television composers and in-demand session and touring musicians. UNO alums are important parts of nearly all of the musical activities in New Orleans, from touring with the Preservation Hall, to leading the music programs at NOCCA, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation, Tulane and Dillard.
