Cemetery Maintenance Worker

Supports the day-to-day operations of the cemetery, including coordinating burial use and other activities, planning for major projects, overseeing gravesite and stone placement, and providing information and assistance to family members and visitors. Perform comprehensive cemetery caretaking and groundskeeping duties, including mowing grass with riding and hand equipment; trimming and pruning trees and shrubs; weeding; fertilizing; planting; maintaining landscaping; applying pesticide and herbicide; raising and lowering flags; opening the cemetery daily; and completing routine and special grounds projects. Ensure the overall presentation and appearance of cemetery grounds and structures, including cleaning mausoleums and statues. Prepare gravesites and burial areas by digging with backhoe and hand tools; opening and closing graves, niches, and crypts; setting up graves for services; replacing sod; restoring and cleaning sites following services; and installing headstones, markers, crypt bars, niche bars, and related forms according to required standards. Ensure accuracy of interment and entombment locations and installations while working independently or in partnership with other cemetery staff. Follow all safety rules and regulations; identify and report safety concerns to a supervisor; maintain safe work practices and safe work areas. Monitor, maintain, and perform or schedule repairs for sprinkler systems, lawn maintenance equipment, cemetery equipment, vehicles, and tools. Clean and maintain equipment, tools, shop areas, and work sites; pressure wash vehicles and equipment as instructed. Maintain inventory of cemetery and maintenance equipment and maintain files and records of work performed in accordance with established procedures and accuracy safeguards. Recommend equipment purchases and secure or purchase supplies within established procedures for assigned jobs. Work with supervisors to ensure proper recordkeeping and procedural compliance. Assist clients and visitors with locating gravesites and navigating the cemetery. Perform related duties and special assignments as required. Other duties may be assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Provide limited operational task-related oversight and direction to seasonal cemetery workers as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED. Minimum experience of one year in skilled landscape maintenance such as mowing, edging, sprinkler installation/repair, plant and flower installation, etc.; landscape, construction, and equipment operation required. Must possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Must possess valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with families. Ability to speak effectively to customers and employees. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, & decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage, and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES - Working knowledge of methods and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of landscaped areas and cemetery facilities. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment including backhoe, front end loader, and dump truck. Ability to safely operate a variety of general construction tools and equipment. MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED - Operate maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, and power tools such as mowers, edgers, and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50-75 lbs. with team assistance and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. with equipment assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT - The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
