Primary Purpose The University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites for the preparation of future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork. The Exceptional Children’s (EC) resource teacher will play an integral role in developing a robust academic program for students in the general education classroom or special education classroom setting. They will be focused on improving student outcomes by building capacity to integrate best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. The Academy at Middle Fork is moving toward an innovative, team-based teaching model that promotes co-teaching and inclusive practices. The EC resource teacher will be critical in helping to facilitate this collaborative approach. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education License/ Certification Required Hold or be eligible for a NC teaching license in Special Education – General Curriculum Preferred Qualifications 3 years of successful teaching experience Master’s degree in education National Board Certification Essential Duties and Responsibilities Create fair and welcoming classroom communities Foster a growth mindset and model inclusive practices Use restorative practices to address learning and behavior needs Communicate positively, effectively, and regularly with students and families Actively engage with colleagues, school administration, the local community, and university partners to cultivate a collaborative school environment Develop and implement an instructional plan to meet the needs of students with disabilities Implement co-planning, co-teaching, co-assessment, and co-reflection practices with general education teachers Develop and implement Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students, including present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP Assess the progress of students and use data to inform teaching strategies Interpret diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed Evaluate and assess student progress against instructional objectives Employ various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals Deliver instruction using appropriate accommodations and modifications Follow state-mandated due process procedures and functions Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, de-escalate inappropriate behaviors, teach appropriate behavioral strategies, and restrain students when necessary in accordance with established laws and regulations Assist students with disabilities with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves Collaborate and plan regularly with general education teachers to ensure students are receiving appropriate classroom accommodations and to help teachers understand student IEPs Communicate with parents regarding their child’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports Act as a case manager for assigned students; consult with community resources, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s policies governing services for children with disabilities Fully understand and follow expectations set forth by the staff handbook Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time Attend and be fully engaged in staff meetings, PLT meetings, and other committee meetings Engage in opportunities for enhanced professional development to stay current in innovative teaching practices affecting the whole child Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, families, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws Share responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in areas of the school Comply with state and federal education statutes, including the NC Code of Ethics for Educators Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Other duties as assigned Type of Position Full Time Position Staff/ Non-Faculty Staff/ Non-Faculty VISA Sponsorship?
