Position Funding-Contingent. This is a funding-contingent position, and continuation of employment is dependent upon the availability of funds. Position Overview The Assistant Handball Coach supports the Head Handball Coach in the daily operations and competitive success of the collegiate handball program. This role emphasizes athlete development, training execution, recruitment support, student success, and community engagement. The Assistant Coach will play a key role in fostering a positive team culture and supporting the holistic development of student-athletes—academically, personally, and athletically—while aligning with the mission of Student Affairs and Competitive Club Sports. In addition to handball-specific responsibilities, this position contributes to the broader Competitive Club Sports ecosystem by supporting cohort-based Residential Living Learning Communities (LL - Cs) and Affinity Groups and assisting with marketing, communications, and promotion efforts across all competitive club programs. Typical Duties/ Job Duties Position Scope & Effort Allocation The Assistant Handball Coach position is designed to balance competitive coaching responsibilities with student development, community-building, and program promotion across Competitive Club Sports. Approximate effort allocation is as follows: Coaching, Training & Competition Support – 50% Practice execution, skill development, game preparation, competitions, and travel support. Student Success, Retention & Community Engagement – 25%Supporting student-athlete well-being, retention efforts, Residential Living Learning Communities (LL - Cs), Affinity Groups, and holistic student development initiatives. Recruitment, Marketing & Communications – 15%Recruitment support, social media content, student-athlete highlights, tournament results, announcements, and recruiting/signing promotions. Administrative & Program Support – 10%Scheduling support, documentation, coordination with Student Affairs partners, and compliance with university and Competitive Club Sports expectations. Key Responsibilities Coaching & Training Support Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting practice sessions, skill development drills, and conditioning activities under the direction of the Head Handball Coach. Support the implementation of game strategies and provide on-court coaching during practices, scrimmages, and competitions. Help assess individual and team performance; provide timely feedback and skill instruction to student-athletes. Promote a culture of sportsmanship, accountability, and safety consistent with university and sport-specific standards. Recruitment & Retention Support Assist with student-athlete recruitment efforts, including identifying prospective students, attending events as needed, and supporting outreach to high schools and handball clubs. Support onboarding and retention of student-athletes by fostering strong team connections and encouraging engagement with academic and campus resources. Game & Event Operations Assist with game-day operations, including equipment setup, travel preparation, tournament logistics, and post-event wrap-up. Ensure adherence to rules, eligibility requirements, and safety protocols during practices and competitions. Student Success & Well-Being Serve as a supportive presence for student-athletes by reinforcing academic expectations, monitoring general well-being, and making referrals to appropriate campus resources as needed. Collaborate with the Head Coach and Student Affairs staff on early-alert, care, or case management processes when student-athletes are identified as at-risk. Competitive Club Sports Cohort & Community Support Support the development and implementation of cohort-based Residential Living Learning Communities (LL - Cs) and/or Affinity Groups for student-athletes participating in Competitive Club Sports. Collaborate with Housing, Residential Programs, and Student Affairs partners to strengthen peer connections, leadership development, belonging, and retention among club sport athletes. Assist with programming, educational initiatives, and community-building activities that enhance the student-athlete living and learning experience beyond the playing surface. Marketing, Communications & Promotion Support Assist with social media promotion, marketing, and communications efforts for the handball program and broader Competitive Club Sports initiatives. Support the creation and dissemination of content highlighting student-athlete achievements, competition results, tournaments, and milestones. Contribute to recruiting and signing promotions, including announcements for new student-athletes and key program updates. Collaborate with Student Affairs, Competitive Club Sports staff, and university communications partners to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment. Administrative Support Assist the Head Handball Coach with program organization, documentation, scheduling support, and tracking of participation as needed. Maintain familiarity with university policies, Competitive Club Sports guidelines, and sport-specific regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and experience with the game of Handball Coaching collegiate teams Minimum Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in Sports Management, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field. Playing or coaching experience in handball or a related sport. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with diverse student populations. Commitment to student development, inclusion, and student success. Preferred Qualifications Preferred Prior experience coaching at the collegiate or club level. Experience supporting student engagement, residential learning communities, or student leadership initiatives. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain). Familiarity with social media platforms and basic marketing or content creation practices. Physical Requirements Work Environment & Expectations Evening and weekend availability required for practices, competitions, and tournaments. Ability to travel occasionally with the team.
