The Department of Educational Leadership & Workforce Development invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in Higher Education to join a dynamic R 1 research environment and contribute to graduate teaching, scholarship, and service in a practitioner–scholar program. The Higher Education (HIED) Program seeks candidates for the following appointments beginning August 2026: Position A: Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure-Track Position B: Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track) Rank will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and institutional criteria. About the Program and University Old Dominion University is a public, metropolitan, Carnegie Research 1 institution located in the Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, enrolling approximately 18,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students. In 2024, ODU merged with Eastern Virginia Medical School, expanding its academic and research footprint in the health sciences. Hampton Roads offers a rich cultural and professional environment with a high quality of life, access to coastal living, and proximity to major policy and higher education hubs. The region is approximately 90 minutes from Richmond and within easy reach of Washington, DC, providing access to state and federal agencies, national higher education organizations, research partners, and professional networks of interest to higher education scholars and practitioners. The Higher Education (HIED) Program, housed in the Darden College of Education & Professional Studies, has a long-standing national reputation for excellence. The program prepares higher education leaders, scholars, and practitioners through a practitioner–scholar model and offers master’s, specialist, and PhD. degrees, including cohort-based doctoral experiences with national and international engagement. Position Responsibilities Faculty appointed through this search will be expected to: Maintain an active and sustained scholarly agenda leading to peer-reviewed publications Actively engage in submitting and acquiring external funding consistent with tenure and promotion standards at an R 1 institution Teach graduate courses (master’s, Ed. S., and PhD.) in face-to-face and online formats, including asynchronous delivery; the typical teaching load is four graduate courses per academic year Advise and mentor graduate students, including chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees Contribute to curriculum development, program governance, and departmental initiatives Engage in service to the department, college, university, and profession appropriate to rank Collaborate with state, national, and international organizations in higher education Position Type FullTime Type of Recruitment General Public Type of Recruitment General Public Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications A doctorate degree from a regionally accredited university in Higher Education or a related field. Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities Faculty appointed through this search will be expected to: Maintain an active and sustained scholarly agenda leading to peer-reviewed publications and, where appropriate, pursuit of external funding consistent with tenure and promotion standards at an R 1 institution Teach graduate courses (master’s, Ed. S., and PhD.) in face-to-face and online formats, including asynchronous delivery; the typical teaching load is four graduate courses per academic year Advise and mentor graduate students, including chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees Contribute to curriculum development, program governance, and departmental initiatives Engage in service to the department, college, university, and profession appropriate to rank Collaborate with state, national, and international organizations in higher education Minimum Qualifications Earned doctorate in Higher Education or a closely related field by the start date An emerging record of scholarly productivity demonstrating strong potential for sustained peer-reviewed publication and, where appropriate, pursuit of external funding Professional experience in higher education administration (e.g., student affairs, academic affairs, institutional research, enrollment management) Scholarly expertise related to higher education systems (e.g., student affairs, governance, law, policy, finance, leadership, teaching and learning, equity, or data-informed decision-making) Demonstrated or emerging expertise in research methodologies relevant to higher education scholarship (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, policy analysis, evaluation) Demonstrated potential for effective graduate teaching across instructional modalities Commitment to equity, inclusion, collaboration, and student success Evidence of potential to advise and mentor graduate students Additional Qualifications for Appointment at the Rank of Associate Professor Record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with appointment at the Associate Professor rank Sustained scholarly productivity, impact, and external visibility Demonstrated effectiveness in graduate-level teaching Experience chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees Demonstrated leadership and service within higher education Preferred Qualifications Experience securing external funding as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator Presentations or leadership roles in professional associations such as ASHE, AERA, NASPA, ACPA, SACSA, or related organizations Experience advising master’s and/or doctoral students Experience in academic program administration (e.g., curriculum development, assessment, program coordination) Evidence of strong collaboration with colleagues and higher education organizations Conditions of Employment Location Norfolk, VA Job Open Date 07/25/2026 Application Review Date 02/20/2026 Open Until Filled Yes Application Instructions Qualified individuals should submit the following to A letter highlighting areas of primary scholarly expertise and qualifications for the position.
