EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers. Develops and maintains good working relationships with community partners, regional municipalities/institutions, and commissions to expand network and increase knowledge in sustainability initiatives. Collaborates with educational partners and community groups to develop and promote sustainability practices. Works with internal and community partners to advance community programming Conducts research and remain informed of current best practices in communicating sustainability principles. Works with the Volunteer and Event Coordinator to create volunteer opportunities for adults and students to participate in sustainability initiatives. Coordinates multiple communication campaigns on both individual and collective actions. Prepares the annual progress report to the community on the implementation of sustainability initiatives, designing the communication materials, messaging, and distribution. Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding operation needs. Prepares, monitors, and makes recommendations on budgetary decisions for the section budget and expenditures. Food Systems Coordinator. Designs, implements, and manages programs that strengthen local food system resilience, improving equitable access to healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food. Oversees city-led initiatives such as community gardens, urban farm incubator sites, pollinator programs, and backyard animal keeping. Builds and maintains partnerships with internal city departments (Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Events; Planning and Development; Economic Vitality; Police; Housing) and external partners (community organizations, schools, businesses, public health)Develops and leads workshops, events, and outreach efforts that promote food access, local food cultivation, and connections to sustainability and public health Develops and executes maintenance, operations, and infrastructure plans to ensure long-term success and growth of food system programs Coordinates day-to-day operations of community gardens and city urban agriculture sites, including strategic planning for current and future locations, plot registration, accessibility improvements, volunteer coordination, and community engagement. Establishes and implements health and safety protocols across all program sites, ensuring safe, accessible environments for gardeners, volunteers, and community members. Supports implementation of the Flagstaff Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) and related initiatives by integrating food systems into climate adaptation, mitigation, and preparedness strategies. Advances food system integration within resilience and health initiatives, including supporting resilience hubs, strengthening food distribution networks, and coordinating with emergency management and public health partners to improve preparedness for climate-related disruptions. Facilitates inclusive and accessible engagement, prioritizing participation from frontline communities. Embeds equity into all programs, services, and decision-making processes. Develops, manages, and monitors program budgets to ensure effective and sustainable operations. Manages contracts and vendor relationships, such as landscaping, pest management, small-scale construction. Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - Two (2) years of related college level course work. Three (3) years of project coordination experience in resource conservation, food systems, and/or sustainability practices. Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid class D driver’s license. DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING - Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Building Science, Public Relations or Administration, Climate Science, Community Sustainability, Communications, Community Organizing, Food Systems, or a related field. Experience creating outreach materials, public-facing communications and using social media. Experience managing projects, volunteers, committees or events. Familiarity with climate initiatives, climate planning, greenhouse gas mitigation and climate adaptation. Ability to use design principles to create promotional materials and internal reports Knowledgeable of successful social marketing techniques. OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed
