About the Job. The building inspector work involves performing inspections of a variety of building construction in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and other structures for structural safety, fire/life safety, energy conservation, and conformity of the entire structure to determine whether workmanship, installation, and materials conform with requirements set forth in the approved plans, the city and state building codes, and related laws, ordinances and regulations. In addition, inspection of relevant work pertaining to the Washington State Energy Code and the accessibility requirements of the Washington State Building Code is performed. Employees usually work independently in the field and are responsible for independent decisions requiring technical judgment. The work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Inspector and the Building Official. For a full description of this position, please see the class specification on the City’s website. This position is eligible for internal promotion to Building Inspector II as noted in the Special Requirements and Certifications section listed in the class spec on the City’s website. About the Division. The Permit Services inspection workgroup inspects all facets of construction for private development. This includes building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, utilities, roadways, and sitework for diverse types of projects, including residential, commercial, hospitals, industrial facilities, port facilities, marinas, mid- and high-rise buildings, nuclear research and development, various manufacturing including one of the world’s largest manufacturing plants. The inspection workgroup is made up of highly trained tradespersons with numerous years of construction experience. Most of the positions require licensing, training, and certifications. The workgroup is currently staffed by ten inspectors who collectively complete roughly 20,000 inspections each year. The inspectors also perform plan reviews and field a variety of technical inquiries providing exceptional customer service to owners, architects, engineers, and contractors. This group of inspectors keeps construction moving while maintaining minimum standards throughout the City of Everett. Why Everett? Experience performing inspections or quality control is highly desirable. Possession of, a valid, unrestricted (corrective lenses allowed) driver license at the date of hire; and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hire. EXAMINATION STEPS - There will be a pre-screening of all applications. Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 10%). Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 90%). All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months. IMPORTANT NOTESA passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register. The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
