The City of Verona is recruiting to fill a Building Inspector vacancy. This Position will be filled at the Building Inspector 1, 2, or 3 level based on qualifications (experience and certifications). Under the general supervision of the Head Building Inspector, this role is dedicated to ensuring public protection, safety, health, and well-being by conducting inspections, enforcing regulations, and performing related functions to maintain compliance with Federal, State, and City codes and ordinances. This is a highly technical positions that involves on-site inspections of building construction and existing properties throughout the City of Verona. Work is carried out independently in the field, with decisions made autonomously within designated areas of responsibility. The role requires frequent interaction with the public, contractors, and other City staff members. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be placed at the Building Inspection 1, 2, or 3 level based on experience and certifications upon hire (more information below). If hired at the Building Inspection 1 or 2 level, the employee may progress within the series (up to level 3) by gaining the necessary combination of experience and/or certification requirements. Building Inspector Series Pay Range:Building Inspector 1: $32.03-$43.08 hourly. Building Inspector 2: $35.23-$47.39 hourly. The deadline to apply for this position is Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Job Duties and Responsibilities Building Inspector I:- Conduct on-site inspections of buildings and structures during and after construction to ensure compliance with Verona Ordinances and state codes.- Inspect properties for proper maintenance, including erosion control, noxious weed control, and sidewalk snow and ice removal.- Prepare detailed and concise inspection reports of code violations, maintain inspection data and records, and submit quarterly reports for the Building Inspector.- Investigate code compliance complaints from tenants, landlords, property owners, and the public. Building Inspector II:- Perform all duties of Building Inspector I with enhanced professional expertise.- Carry out inspections of buildings under construction for compliance with building and zoning codes.- Assist with inspections of increasing complexity, including commercial properties and electrical inspections of one- and two-family buildings. Building Inspector III:- Fulfill all functions of Building Inspector II with advanced professional expertise.- Independently conduct the most complex inspections, including those of commercial properties.- Perform acceptance tests on commercial alarm and sprinkler systems.- Review building and site plans, specifications, and relevant documentation to ensure construction aligns with approved plans.- Provide training and guidance to other inspection staff. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Working knowledge (Inspector I) to a thorough knowledge (Inspector III) of building construction principles, practices, methods, and materials. - Working knowledge of and ability to use computer software applicable to the duties of the position. - Working knowledge (Inspector I) to a thorough knowledge (Inspector III) of applicable codes, standards, and ordinances. - Ability to use clear language to write technical reports. - Ability to perform detailed work with great accuracy. - Ability to work independently with only occasional review of work performance. - Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with a variety of people, including co-workers, other professionals, contractors, developers, elected officials, and the public. - Physical agility and strength are necessary to climb, bend and access confined spaces in order to conduct inspections. - Ability to maintain adequate attendance. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City elected and appointed officials, employees, and the general public. - Ability to work with culturally diverse individuals and groups. - Ability to attend meetings and other functions during the evening and/or on weekends. Qualifications Education and/or Experience Requirements:Building Inspector I: - High School Diploma or equivalent required. Building Inspector II: - High School Diploma or equivalent required. - Two years post high school education in a construction related field required. - Minimum of three years progressively responsible work in the Building Code Inspection Field required. Additional work experience may substitute for formal education on a year for year basis. Building Inspector III: - High School Diploma or equivalent required. - Two years post high school education in a construction related field required. - Five years progressively responsible work in the Building Code Inspection Field required. Additional work experience may substitute for formal education on a year for year basis. Licenses/ Certifications Requirements: Building Inspector I: - Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain during entire course of employment. - Must possess or obtain State of Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code Construction Inspector and Uniform Dwelling Code HVAC Inspector certification within 12 months of hire. Building Inspector II: - Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain during entire course of employment. - Must possess the following State of Wisconsin certifications:Uniform Dwelling Code Construction Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code HVAC Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code Electric Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code Plumbing Inspector - Must have at least oneof the following below, more than one is desired: Commercial Building Certification Commercial Plumbing Certification Commercial Electrical Certification. Building Inspector III: - Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain during entire course of employment. - Must possess the following State of Wisconsin certifications:Uniform Dwelling Code Construction Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code HVAC Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code Electric Inspector. Uniform Dwelling Code Plumbing Inspector - Must have at least two of the following below, all three are desired:Commercial Building Certification. Commercial Plumbing Certification.
