This position responds to, investigates, and assesses situational needs at vehicle crash scenes and operates a public safety officer vehicle in assigned district or area. The Public Safety Officer assists in traffic and crowd control, including large scale events; provides general assistance to the public; performs a variety of police-community relations; reports suspicious activities to communications; identifies, gathers, and processes evidence at crime scenes according to IMPD procedures, and operates prisoner transportation vehicles, searches, takes control of prisoners and their property for transportation to prisoner intake and property room all according to Indiana State Law, and IMPD policy and procedures. Position Responsibilities - Responds to, investigates and assesses situational needs at vehicle crashes. - Completes reports based on the investigation conducted regarding vehicle crashes. - Performs traffic control (vehicular and pedestrian). - Performs duties related to traffic law enforcement. - Issues city ordinance violations. - Tows vehicles in accordance with applicable law. - Performs a variety of police-community relations functions. - Reports suspicious activities to Communications. - Identifies, gathers, and processes evidence at crime scenes according to departmental procedures. - Enters reports in departmental computer system. - Operates prisoner transportation vehicles according to Indiana State Law and IMPD policy and procedure. - Searches and takes control of prisoners for transportation to prisoner intake. - Takes control of prisoner’s personal property for transportation to prisoner intake, or property room. - Maintains uniform, equipment, and supplies. Qualifications High School education or equivalent. One to two years of prior related experience preferred(i.e., law enforcement, traffic enforcement, security, public safety, corrections, criminal justice). Must be at least 21 years of age prior to employment in order to qualify for Special Police Powers. Must be able to pass pre-employment screening (background investigation, polygraph examination, drug screen). Must successfully complete Public Safety Officer training. Knowledge of law enforcement information systems; city geography; police report writing; police report writing systems; police radio procedures; traffic enforcement laws and codes; IMPD regulations, policies and procedures; related criminal and civil law; basic computer operation; evidence identification, collection and processing. Must possess a valid driver’s license from the state of Indiana and be able to operate a public safety vehicle. Must be able to stand for extended periods while directing traffic, walk, kneel, twist, squat, stoop, and bend to conduct accident investigations and collect/process evidence at crime scenes. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to obtain and maintain IDACS/ NCIC certification and Special Police Powers. Must be able to learn investigative and interview techniques. Must be able to handle hostile personal contacts. Must be able to operate and maintain issued equipment. Must be able to operate photographic equipment. Working Conditions Work is normally performed outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to potentially dangerous situations and the hazards associated with traffic control and emergency situations. Employee may be required to stand for long periods of time while directing traffic, securing accident scenes, or conducting accident investigations. Employee may be required to kneel, twist, squat and bend while collecting and processing evidence at crime scenes. Shift work at various district sites may be required. This position is subject to routine, random drug screens.
