To assist the technologists in performing laboratory duties, including specimen processing, problem solving, adding tests to specimens, answering the phone and unpacking reagent boxes. Prepares and weighs samples for testing and analysis. May set up and conduct tests and other protocols under the direction of a technologist. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Ensure all laboratory equipment and work areas are clean, sterile, and in proper working order. May help calibrate instruments, process QC (Quality Control) and be involved in media prep. Essential Job functions:Put away supplies, rotating stock to prevent product expiration. Troubleshoot problem specimens to find resolution. Communicates outcome with office & Lab Staff. Answer the phone; take messages; obtain necessary information and give responses to callers. Readies specimens for placement onto analyzers, ensuring that the barcoded label is properly affixed to the specimen tubes. Utilize necessary computer applications to collect office collected specimens in the LIS, print labels and reference laboratory requisitions. Measures and pours off aliquot of 24 hr urine specimens. Ensures that specimens were collected in proper additive or that additive is added before specimen is sent for testing. Centrifuge specimens that are delivered to the lab after appropriate amount of time has elapsed for proper clotting. Discard aged specimens in appropriate disposal units. Organize prior days’ work sheets & instrument print outs for storage. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned, that are within the scope of ability. Perform maintenance on instruments under technologist supervision. If working in the Pathology Department the Laboratory Assistant III will perform frozen section, ROSE cases, prepare slides for testing and immunohistochemical staining. Dexterity of hands and fingers. Physical strength to lift heavy objects, carts, or items, taking frequency and weight into consideration. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds. Physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed into account. Balance is maintained during climbing, bending and/or reaching. Physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver the body while in place. Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position. Environmental Risks:Chemicals, Sharps, Latex, Chemotherapy and Fumes. Loud noises. Vibration. Extreme temperatures. Confined spaces. Allergens: dust, mold and/or pollen. Magnetic fields. Radiation. Combative patients/visitors. Blood-borne Pathogen:Exposure to infectious hazards, blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens. Contact with patients or patient specimens is possible. Unplanned or unexpected exposure. Exposure to infectious hazards, blood, and other body fluids. Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:Associate’s degree required. Health Sciences degree (AA/ AS, BA/ BS), preferred .-2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting and understanding of laboratory equipment. 2-4 years’ experience related work experience preferred. Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, required. Moderate-High level Computer skills required. Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, Email/ Voice Mail). Standard Office Technology in a Window based environment. Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing required. Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a laboratory environment. Methods of Evaluation: Documented evaluations occur at the end of full training and periodically thereafter. Travel:None Required. Pay Range: $21.30 - $26.15 Hourly The provided compensation range is based on industry standards and salary determinations will be made based on numerous factors including but not limited to years of experience and location of position.
