The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Customer Care Division, is seeking a hands-on Water Service Investigator I! This full-time, permanent position, located in Honolulu, involves investigating water service issues and billing problems, assisting with locating leaks and pipes, testing and replacing meter equipment, and driving to job sites. What You'll Do:Investigate abnormal water usage by reviewing records, checking meters, and working directly with consumers to find the cause. Inspect and test water meters to verify accuracy, detect leaks, and recommend billing adjustments when needed. Identify and troubleshoot water service issues such as leaks, low pressure, no water, or system malfunctions. Locate and map water distribution systems including underground pipes and leaks using field tools and sketches. Maintain and repair AMR equipment by diagnosing issues, replacing components, and ensuring proper system function. Document and report findings by entering investigation results and maintaining accurate records in the system. Perform other related duties as required. Special Work Requirements:Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. May be exposed to soil, water, mud and assorted debris. Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:One (1) year of public contact work experience which shall have involved interviewing, investigative or other fact finding activities. Must be able to:Understand water system operations (pipes, reservoirs, pumps, supply sources)Identify causes of water service problems (leaks, pressure loss, blockages)Collect and analyze field data. Use investigation tools (leak detectors, pressure gauges, pipe locators)Read construction plans and system layouts. Create simple maps or sketches of underground pipes. Understand basic hydraulics for water flow and pressure. Apply department rules and policies to real situations. Write clear, concise reports. Communicate effectively with the public and coworkers. Safely operate a vehicle for fieldwork. LICENSE REQUIREMENT:Valid Hawai`i Driver's License (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
