Lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Performs any combination of the following tasks: grading trenches or culverts, positioning pipe or sealing joints; performs other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:Lays and repairs various types of pipe materials for sanitary sewers, drains or water mains. Grades and smoothes trench or culvert to specified elevation. Guides hoist or crane. Inserts spigot end of pipe into bell end of previously laid section. Adjusts pipe to line and grade. Secures pipe into position and seals joints. Prepares and shores ditches. Rigs pipes for lowering into position. Perform Miss Utility Locates as necessary. Performs Miss Utility Standby for emergency locates. Install temporary storage tanks at water stations as needed. Performs standby duties on a rotational basis. Other Duties:Performs other duties as assigned
Typical Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures. Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public. Knowledge of relevant pipe laying practices and procedures. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating and maintaining equipment as well as for ensuring safety. Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members. Obtain flagger training. Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.):Training and/or Education:High School Diploma or G.E.D. and six months or more of related job experience. Experience:Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience. Licenses or Certificates:Must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License. Must obtain Maryland CDL Class A within 18 months. Special Requirements:None. Physical Demands:Work requires constant physical effort in the handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 60 pounds or more. Unusual Demands:Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress, which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined workspace, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
