This position is through a program called the Resource Monitoring Internship (Re. MI), which is collaboration between the South Florida/ Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network of the National Park Service and Florida International University. The Re. MI program is designed to facilitate the introduction of students via a recently graduated student or a graduate student to gain experience in resource monitoring. This position is mostly concentrated on soil sampling, bird monitoring, vegetation sampling, sampling of exotic vegetation, and mapping of vegetation communities. However, the research assistant will work on a number of projects related to the management of natural resources in Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and possible work occurring in Dry Tortugas National Park, Virgin Islands National Park and. Salt River Ecological Preserve, St. Croix. This position has a large field component. Please see the link for more background information. To Perform the duties associated with the Resource Monitoring Intern Program which is supervised work in the following areas:Vegetation. Periphyton. Bird nesting. Soil monitoring in the following sub area field work. Data collection. Data input. QA/ QC of inputted data. The production of basic interpretations of rendering of data. Equipment maintenance. Cleaning and cataloging of equipment. Specimens. Duty stations is at South Florida / Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network, 18001 Old Cutler Road Suite 419. Minimum Qualifications. High school diploma with three (3) years of experience or two (2) years of post-secondary education with one (1) year of experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Desired Qualifications. Ideal candidate will have knowledge about South Florida Ecology, some vegetation knowledge, GIS, and sampling experiences, and/or a strong desire to learn these skills. Candidates will have completed a undergraduate degree in the Biology, Earth and the Environment, or related field. Candidates should be comfortable working independently on task orientated-type projects. Candidate should be comfortable camping for extended period of time. Any research experience is helpful and more beneficial if research experience is associated with vegetation, birds, soils, and/or water. Or other natural history experience. Any experiences with data collection, basic skills in Excel, MS - Word or other comparable programs, photography, or photographic manipulation, and or GIS. Outdoor experiences camping, boat skills, kayaking, or canoeing is useful, Candidate must be able to swim. Job Category. Temporary. Temporary Disclosure.
