Library Assistants in Adult Services provide a variety of services including, but not limited to: high-quality customer service; answering reference, readers' advisory, and general information inquiries; creating and managing displays; and supporting work in the areas of programming, collection development, and outreach for adult library users. The salary range for this position is $19.07- $25.74 per hour with a hiring range of $19.07 - $22.40, depending on qualifications and experience. The Assistant Librarian is a part-time, 20 hours per week position that provides a variety of services including, but not limited to: delivering high-quality customer service; answering reference, readers' advisory, and general information inquiries; creating and maintaining library displays; and supporting programming, collection development, and outreach initiatives for adult library users. Essential Functions: Create dynamic and diverse book/materials displays to enhance library experience and promote the use and engagement of library resources. Manages tax forms, library handouts, and community materials. Assists Adult Services Librarians with programming, collection development, and outreach as needed. Assists library users in the use and navigation of library materials, resources, and technologies. Searches for, locates, and retrieves reliable information and materials to answer questions posed in person, by phone, and by email. Performs basic circulation activities such as placing holds, renewing materials, and updating patron records. Provides effective readers' advisory for all readers. Maintains the schedule and effective use of study rooms. Other Job Functions: Performs shelving and shelf-reading activities as needed. Attends and participates in regular staff meetings as well as cross-division teams and cross-department initiatives as needed. Maintains a safe and welcoming library space through regular opening and closing duties, responding to and documenting incidents, and following all library policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications: Education: Associates Degree required. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Experience: 1 year of library or closely related experience required. Experience providing customer service to diverse individuals and groups preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for the education requirements on a year for year basis. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Provide strong customer service to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Positively inspire and energize individuals about library services and materials. Incorporate equity, diversity and inclusion in all operations. Ability to work collaboratively across teams and independently to complete tasks on time and constructively problem solve. Perform job duties effectively during relaxed or stressed activity level within the department. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. General knowledge of computer-based library systems. Welcomes diverse populations, including but not limited to cultural, racial, economic, and ethnic diversity. Spanish language proficiency preferred. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Frequent light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools. Frequent exposure to routine office noise and equipment. Occasional moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools. Occasional exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident. Continuous Floating Holiday: This position may work evenings, weekends, and holidays. As a result, the position is eligible for Continuous Floating Holiday.
