Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages in various inpatient or outpatient locations. Prioritizes and organizes work to meet turnaround time requirements for patient care areas. Greet patients, screen preparedness for tests requested, i.e., fasting, special diet. If patient is adequately prepared, instruct patient to wait to be called. If patient is not prepared, give appropriate instructions and make return appointment. Answer phones for inquiries of results. Recall data via LIS and report by phone. Trace results not yet posted. Make decisions as to the completeness of specimens/specimen requests. Performs manual computer procedures for releasing orders, entering manual paper orders, cancelling, and/or crediting tests ordered. Performs basic front desk functions including appointment check-in, registration, and verifying billing information when needed. Appropriately escalate problems to Supervisor or Manager as needed for assistance. Process patient specimens for appropriate transport and delivery to the laboratory. Stock drawing areas and assist other staff in monitoring expendable supplies. Order supplies in Supervisors absence as needed. Provides training and education to new employees or rotating students as needed. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required:High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a phlebotomist within the last five years. Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR Certification. Preferred Qualifications:Must have technician level knowledge of all areas of the laboratory (such as a certification eligible graduate from an approved technician school or prior work experience) would possess. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Must possess an adequate set of skills related to computer functions including computer language and typing. Must have knowledge of special handling of specimens required for most tests performed by the laboratory. Must know basic chemical symbols. Must be able to identify appropriate laboratory areas, e.g., Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, etc. Must be able to learn over 200 laboratory codes and 50 patient locations. Must understand laboratory work flow so pending specimens can be quickly located. Must know aseptic technique as applied to the techniques of phlebotomy. Must know correct procedure for using standard phlebotomy equipment. Must know or be able to learn age-specific psycho-social needs of patients of all ages as it relates to phlebotomy. Must be able to assess parent cooperation when drawing a child or assess need for special kindness when drawing a compromised adult. Must know or be able to learn non-verbal cues in communicating/interacting with patients of all ages. Must know or be able to learn basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Basic First Aid and/or CPR certification preferred. Must know correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimens so as not to contaminate self, co-workers or the work area. Must be able to maintain an adequate inventory of expendable supplies notifying the supervisor and/or ordering replacements before stored supplies run out. Must exhibit a kindness and caring attitude when working with patients of all ages. Must be able to respond to patient fears with reassurance. Must exhibit a professional attitude when working with the public as well as medical personnel at all levels. The ability to converse in Spanish is highly desirable to facilitate communication with Hispanic patients served by the hospital and clinics.
