The City of Greeley Water & Sewer Department is seeking an intern who is interested in providing financial forecasting support to the Utility Finance team for a growing, dynamic community. With the Water and Sewer Utility Finance team, you will work with other dedicated employees to enhance Greeley’s long term financial planning helping to ensure that needed infrastructure and other improvements to the Water and Sewer systems can be paid for. The Utility Finance team uses data collected on customer water use, wastewater production and numerous external sources to forecast future needs. Ensuring that both expense and revenue forecasts are as accurate as possible while accounting for the unknown is key to planning the future for the city. The Utility Finance intern will support this forecasting by working to ensure the data needed is collected and collated appropriately, analyzing that data to seek long term trends in customer demands, and quantifying the underlying variability. The team aims in 2025 and 2026, to make significant improvements in the forecasting of multi-family account demands by improving the quality of data available and exploring various approaches to the forecasting effort. On the expenditure side of the problem, the team needs an accurate evaluation of the marginal cost of producing water and treating wastewater for the city to help department leadership understand the impact that changes in customer use will have on expenditures. Duties include exploring a variety of internal and external data sources, using data analysis software such as R or Python to collate and analyze that data, and preparing reports in Excel for communicating the data to stakeholders and leaders. The position requires a self-motivated candidate who can work independently, is familiar with data analysis software and Excel, and can evaluate data sources. Some driving may be required as part of the data collection effort. Scheduled Hours: 15-40 hours per week during regularly scheduled business hours Potential Duration: June 2026 – August 2026, with the possibility of extension. Both hours and duration are flexible. Work from home 1-2 days per week is possible. Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:Minimum Requirements:Valid, unrestricted driver’s license with at least two (2) years of driving history with a clean record in order to drive for the City. High school diploma or equivalent. Associates degree or currently enrolled in an economics, finance, statistics, or other data intensive related degree program at an accredited university with one to two years of undergraduate coursework completed. Experience using Microsoft Excel Experience with either R or Python ORA combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job may be considered by the hiring authority Preferred Requirements:Currently enrolled in an economics, finance, statistics, or other data intensive related degree at an accredited university as a junior, senior, or extended senior, OR, completion of a bachelor’s degree (four-year degree) from an accredited college or university in an economics, finance, statistics, or other data intensive, or a closely related field. Experience with advanced Excel features is preferred. Previous experience working on engineering projects within a municipality, utility, or engineering firm Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Collaboration skills, including the ability to work with others from different areas and backgrounds to reach a common goal. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results. Ability to maintain a strong work ethic, positive problem-solving attitude, and enthusiasm for the work performed. Ability to self-start and take initiative in completing daily tasks and special projects. Ability to focus on activities that have the greatest impact on meeting work commitments. Ability to establish and maintain partnerships with a variety of internal and external constituencies. Ability to learn additional programming in R or Python. Strong attention to detail and ability to methodically manage repetitive tasks and data. Ability to document procedures and findings for replication. Ability to be self-motivated to investigate data sources, identify patterns, and understand the bigger picture. Ability to proficiently digest, understand, and analyze large amounts of data Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities):Prepare lists, spreadsheets, and reports to communicate and track project tasks. Data management – evaluating fields in customer data. Use R or Python to collate, analyze, and export data. Researching properties records. Document Standard Operating Procedures to facilitate quality control. Assist with underlying goal of improving forecasts of customer demands and department expenses. Utilize other data sources as necessary including Weld County Data and other resources for data retrieval and comparison. Folder and file management.
