Job Responsibilities
The Public Health Legal Counsel Extern will assist the Office of the General Counsel by utilizing legal and policy strategies to support various agency projects. The extern will manage a diverse portfolio of daily tasks, including policy review, statutory analysis, comprehensive legal research and database development. Through this role within the Office of the General Counsel, the extern will gain invaluable, hands-on experience handling sensitive, high-level legal matters, including the critical responsibility of managing and protecting confidential public health data and open records. Duties:Legal Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth legal research on complex statutory, regulatory, and public health issues, providing actionable analysis to the legal team. Memo Drafting: Prepare formal legal memoranda, briefs, and executive summaries outlining research findings and legal recommendations. Document Creation: Draft, review, and edit internal policies, operational guidelines, templates, and legal correspondenceDiscovery & Production Responses: Assist in reviewing, gathering, and preparing responses to Requests for Production (RFPs) and other formal discoveries or open records requests. Inquiry Response: Assist in researching and drafting responses to various formal and informal inquiries that directly impact the Department of Public Health. Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain positive, professional working relationships with external partners and sister agencies
