Experiment Assistance and Mouse Colony Management (75%) Assist with mouse-based research studies, experiments, and assays under supervisor direction. Prepare experimental solutions and reagents according to established protocols. Conduct mouse behavioral experiments and assist with data collection. Perform mouse brain tissue immunohistochemistry procedures. Assist with stereotaxic surgeries, surgical implants, and optogenetic procedures in mice. Manage mouse colonies, including setting up breeding cages, weaning litters, performing genotyping PCR, transferring cages between facilities, and maintaining accurate records. Compile, analyze, and present experimental data using Center-supported statistical programs; provide reports and project updates while ensuring compliance with UW animal care and research policies. General Laboratory Operations Support (25%) Assist with animal protocol modifications and ensure adherence to approved regulatory requirements. Maintain laboratory inventory, order supplies as needed and perform routine laboratory maintenance. Provide general support to postdoctoral fellows and research staff to support ongoing laboratory activities. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. Minimum Qualifications Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department. Two years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent OR a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology. Additional Qualifications Understanding of general scientific approaches to research. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines with strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Strong problem-solving skills. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Willingness and ability to assist others in research activities. Prior experience with laboratory animal handling and mouse colony management, including breeding and genotyping. Demonstrated experience independently managing and maintaining transgenic mouse colonies. Ability to maintain accurate colony records and support management of a large, complex mouse colony. Prior laboratory experience supporting experimental workflows in a research setting Preferred Qualifications Prior experience with solution preparation. Prior experience performing PCR - Prior experience in animal models of neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental, addiction, or pain-related disorders. Prior exposure to optogenetic techniques. Familiarity with Python and/or Matlab programming environments and statistical methodologies. Experience working in neuroscience or opioid-related research environments About the Team As a center of excellence that collaborates with many departments and schools in the University (Division of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences in the Department of Medicine; School of Pharmacology; Neurobiology and others), the NAPE lab is associated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, located at the University of Washington’s Health Science Building.
